Thomas's Story
Life
After recently moving back to the Sacramento area, I am readjusting to the California climate, after having been in Houston's Gulf climate for almost five years.
After graduation from San Juan H.S. in '96, I almost immediately went on board the staff at Mount Vernon Mortuary in Fair Oaks, where I served a two-year state-regulated embalming internship, working indirectly with seven different funeral homes in the Sacramento area. When my internship expired, I moved to Reichert's Funeral and Cremation Services in Citrus Heights, where I gained "corporate administrative support" experience. However, in '00, it was time to move to Houston, where I soon attended Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Services for fifteen months, after which I received an Associate of Applied Science in Funeral Service degree in '01. I had to take the International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Board's "National Board" in order to persue a funeral directing internship in Texas. I was hired at the historic Heights Funeral Home in Houston, where I served most of my funeral directing internship for licensure in Texas. ...Expand for more
However, in order to expedite that process, and to gain more diversified experience, I moved to Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home and Cemetery in Houston, where I completed that internship. I finally became licensed in Texas funeral directing, and moved to become an "FDIC" (funeral director in charge) at two local independently-owned funeral homes, Pulido Broadway Funeral Home and Esperanza Family Funeral Home, both in Houston. Those two gave me my first "fly by the seat of my pants/do it or lose it" experiences as a newly-licensed funeral director. I soon engaged in the Texas embalming internship program, where I completed most of that credit, but circumstances directed me back "home" to California before that was completed. In December '04, I was drafted aboard at Lambert Funeral Home in Roseville, California, where I soon became licensed in the State of California, having to take a California Board exam. I've been directing funeral services since, and have received vast new experiences in this demographic market, and am truly grateful for the experiences thusfar. The rest is in the "hands O' God" ;-)
