Toni's Story

Life After high school, I attended Harford Community College for a year then finished my A.A. degree in Animal Health Technology at Essex Community College in Baltimore County. While working at a few veterinary clinics over the next 5 years or so, I discovered that that salaries paid to vet techs were never going to be enough to keep me in a style to which I could become accustomed. Nearly simultaneously, the first love of my life decided that I wasn't "the one" and married his other girlfriend who just happened to allow herself to get pregnant. Nice strategy. Having my father die about that same time from post-surgical complications didn't help matters too much. I moved on to bigger and better things by attending the University of Maryland, College Park from 1984 through 1986. During that time, I got my first federal government job with the Department of Agriculture but because the job was not a permanent appointment, I needed to move on eventually. After three years in private industry and a broken engagement to a naval officer (does anyone else see a pattern here?), I returned to the federal government in 1991, this time with my wits about me. I have been with Club Fed ever since. I have moved around a couple times, living in Prince George's, Montgomery, and now, Frederick County, Maryland. In the early days, I moved around to be close to school or to work. Sometimes, it was to get out of a bad housemate situation which was finally remedied when I got my own place in 1993. Oh, and in my copious spare time, I managed to complete a Master's degree in Technology Management in 1996. I now reside on an eight acre farmette and all is well. Except for the occassional wild creature that makes it into the house!!! That, as they say, keeps it interesting. My snake trapping skills are put to the test annually. Fortunately, they are the small, non-venomous types. Not sure what I'd do if I had to face down a 6 foot black snake. I hope walk away from a well-paying government job to run a small, home-based business from my farm in the very near future because the commute to Rockville, MD is becoming more brutal by the day. My proposed business is all about herbal products whether it be selling the herbs themselves, creating handcrafted herbal bath and body products, and running an herbal bed and breakfast farmstay. Throw in selling the eggs from my free range chickens. In 2006, I finally finished my horticulture certificate program at the USDA Graduate School which is partially responsible for my deep interest in all things herbal. I am also studying landscape design but don't know if I'll finish that certificate as some of the classes are pretty labor intensive. I've also taken some classes in Feng Shui, Tarot, and a few of the other metaphysical arts. They have been beneficial in helping me focus my energy and intention on various goals that I've had over the years. I have achieved much over the years and my disappointments have been few. I have never married and I have never had children which may or may not be surprising to anyone depending on who you are. Just me and the cats for now. Chickens are coming soon. Maybe even a dog. I have traveled around a bit. Mostly up and down the east coast (Myrtle Beach, Savannah, and requisite spring break in Florida). I've also been to Texas, Hawaii, and California. erested in going out of the country. Less interested lately. I've kind of lost interest in going anywhere that I would have to fly to get there. I have recently been diagnosed with a couple of mild, chronic, annoying conditions. Most can be controlled and even eliminated with diet and exercise so I joined a gym and modified my diet. I still like the occassional junk food binge and eat whatever I damn well please on holidays. As for the others, well, I'll just have to hope for the best that I stay mild and/or chronic. The idea of daily injections with experimental drugs is not my idea of fun. As of April 2008, I've taken up belly dancing lessons. It's fun and can be hard work. I plan to sign up for more lessons in the fall. College I attended Harford Community College in Bel Air, Maryland from 1979-1980 to prepare for ECC and again from 1983-1984 to prepare for UMCP. I was a General Studies major. Next, I attended Essex Community College (ECC) in Baltimore County from 1980-1982 and received my A.A. in Animal Health Technology. After a bit of a break, I attended the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP)from 1984-1986. I received my B.S. in Animal Science. After a 4 year break, I returned to school at the University of Maryland, University College (UMUC). I worked on my M.S. in Technology Management (specializing in Biotechnology Management) from 1990-1996. Now that I am experiencing some kind of mid-life crisis, I am taking classes through a number of institutions such as Frederick Community College, Carroll Community College, The U.S.D.A. Graduate School, and First Class, Inc. Mostly taking small business "how to" classes and classes that have to do with horticulture and landscape design. I have also taken classes in Tarot, Feng Shui, Reiki, Crystal Healing and a few other meta-physical topics. By far some of the best classes I have taken are those that have introduced me to techniques in making my own handcrafted herbal bath and body products. I hope to incorporate that into my small business plan along with running an herb farm and an herbal bed and breakfast farmstay out of my house. Workplace I worked for a number of veterinary clinics/hospitals during my undergrad years. One of my coworkers hooked me up with a student appointment at the USDA in 1984. Stayed there for a couple of years, until I graduated. I then got a temporary appointment for a year. When they were unable to offer a permanent job, with real benefits, etc., I returned to private industry. That turned out to be a double edged sword. It was a pretty good move financially (I got lots of generous raises) but not so good in that it took time away from time I could have put in towards federal employment. Currently working for the Food and Drug Administration in Rockville as an administrative management professional. It pays well but sometimes the aggravation is just not worth it. I "celebrated" 20 years of service in September 2008. I'm growing tired of applying for jobs I'll never get and the candidates are pre-selected. I am looking forward to retirement around September 2018, if all goes as planned. I will take an early retirement if it's offered to me (somebody make me an offer, please!). Then I can pursue some other interests where the money and benefits won't matter so much. Military No military service for me. Too much like real work!
