Tracie's Story
Life
Jim and I have been living in Longmont since June 2007. We are finishing up our stone patio this summer. We still have 4 cats, but they are having health issues; our oldest one has diabetes, and our 2nd oldest cat has hyperthyroidism, so she gets medicine too now. I was laid off from Seagate Technology in Longmont in May 2009, after 18 months of having some time off but struggling to find employment, I landed at UCAR in Boulder in January 2011. I have been a gymnastics judge for 9 years, and am Level 10. In my spare time, I like to read, listen to my ipod, exercise, quilt and watch football and gymnastics.
School
The best thing about Mead and Skyline was that we all got to graduate with friends we went to kindergarten with; not many people can say that. The kids from Mead have a close bond that we will never forget. I most enjoyed being in the bands I was in, especially Skyline because Bill Wilkinson was a great leader and truly loves what he does. Jerry Kokora was one of the best teachers ever; he wanted to teach us more than just math, and he did.
College
I wish I still kept in touch with my first roommate, Peg Jepkes; she is such a true person. I still think about all of the people I met at CU; they were great people! The cafeteria cuisine was pretty bad at times, especially for the all of the marching band kids who would come in late because band ran until 5:50, so we always got what was left over on Mondays and Wednesdays, and sometimes that wasn't much; I remember having cereal and pie many times. the utmost respect for him as a leader. John Garnand in the business school was one of the best teachers I ever had, as well. I remember all of the road trips to the previous "Big 8" conference games. Those were long rides on Thursday nights, but they were so much fun. We had fun letting loose at the hotels after the big games.
Workplace
I started out trying to use my marketing major in a market research in a company in Boulder, but after 2 years and no benefits offered by the company (and boring work!), I tried to become a flight attendant and went to a travel school. During that time I was a temporary at a biotech company. I eventually got a purchasing clerk job, and the rest is history. After working at 2 other different biotechs that never made any money (they had great FAC's and benefits, though!), I made the transition into high tech by landing at Seagate in March of 2000.
My second career as a gymnastics judge has been very rewarding since I was a gymnast at one time and have always loved the sport. That's my fun career.
I always wanted to be a flight attendant when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. Guess it wasn't in the plans; travel has changed so much anyway, so it just isn't the job it once was.
Either listen to music with my cats around me or work out.
Campus life at CU was great; it was neat to meet and talk to so many types of people. Just walking around the campus going from class to class you never knew who you'd run into next. The dorms were pretty fun, but some kids were noisy, and I hated going down the hall to a central bathroom!
