Thomas's Story

My family moved around the country a bit - on average, once every four years. All that moving taught me how to quickly connect with people. (My capacities in sales are probably due to all the experiences I had meeting new people over the years.) After graduating high school I spent a few years going to college classes at Henderson State University, but I did not have much of a plan for exiting - and after four years I was informed I still had four years to go to complete my bachelors degree (prerequisite order and such) so I dropped out of college to get some understanding of why a college degree was really important. It did not take long to discover that the job opportunities for someone without a college degree are very limited, so I completed an associates degree at a Community College in Hot Springs (then: Garland County Community College, now: National Park Community College) and managed to talk my way into some really nice graphic design positions (print shops, grocery store circulars, the Malvern Daily Record newspaper and even a Little Rock Ad agency) but decided the associates degrees tend to earmark me as "expendable" (the jobs were mostly short term, when they needed help in high volume times) when my stubborn nature of wanting things be done in an organized way made me a bit of a thorn in my employers side. ...Expand for more
In 2003 I helped my dad create an outdoor advertising business that did well for him. When he went to start the company he asked me to work for him, but I knew he would outsell my production rate, so I told him I would train him to do anything he wanted to learn how to do, but I would not work for him. As my dad has an exceptional work ethic (unlike anyone I have ever known: willing to get up at 5am to drive across the state to do sales calls until 8pm, then drive back home and stay up until midnight/one am completing advertising designs with me to jump up at 5am and be at the businesses when they open with the ad concept ready for them to sign off on and begin production) he was able to make it profitable within a few years time. (He has since retired from the business and handed running the company over to my younger brother.) I went completed my bachelors in graphic design in 2010, but have not been working in the field. I have been working various retail jobs to pay my bills while trying to figure out how to make my publishing concept profitable. Once I get my income right, I'll get focused on finding the right woman to spend my life with. (My "life experiment" would not have been possible if I had gotten married or had kids - as my energy would have been spent providing income, instead of having learning experiences.)
