Tracy's Story
Life
Born in Clifton Forge, Va. Moved to West Virginia until 5 years old, then to Salem, Va., then to Roanoke, Va where lived till graduated from Virginia Tech in 1962. Prior to Graduation from Tech, was a Radarman in the Navy. After College got married and went to work in Greensboro, NC where retired in 1993 and moved to Hampstead, NC on the beach. Now living in Midlothian, Virginia. Life is still good!
School
High School was like most kids. Growing up some while having a good time. Pole Vaulted and High Jumped on the track team at Jefferson. Belonged to several clubs. Was never voted anything while in school (best looking or most likely to succeed), which made me just another zit kid.
College
Started out at Roanoke College and graduated in Civil Engineering from Va Tech in 1962. Was one of many students that was there on Korean GI Bill. Did not have to serve in Corp since was a veteran. School was tough but was worth every hard time endured. Unlike today, jobs were not a problem, deciding which one to take was one most enjoyed.
Workplace
We...Expand for more
nt to work with the City of Greensboro in 1962 after graduation from college. Started out as a design engineer, then to City Engineer and at retirement was Director of Public Works. Never planned to stay that long, but glad I did.
Military
After boot camp in Bainbridge, Md (1955), I was stationed on board USS Yosemite (AD19). Met Arleigh Burke, (CNO) who helped me get transfered to the Destroyer, Joseph P kennedy, Jr (DD850). Became Radarman 2nd Class. Visited 8 countries in Northern Europe and Med. Spent some time in Beruit during the Suez Crisis. Enjoyed almost every minute of inlistment. Young folks today don't know how much they will and have missed with the voluntary draft being the law of the land.
Later
After retirement, moved to the beach (Hampstead, NC) just outside Wilmington for 18 years. Gave up the beach, golfing, boating and lots of great friends and now living near one of our daughters in Midlothian, Virginia. Closer to my roots now. Life is still good, but the stranger I see in the mirror each morning is beginning to look older!
