Trey's Story

A native of Cross City, Florida, Commander William W. (Trey) Wheeler III is a 1988 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. A designated P-3C Orion Naval Flight Officer, he joined Patrol Squadron SIXTEEN in March of 1990, serving as the Avionics Branch Officer, AW Division Officer, Aircraft Division Officer, NFO NATOPS Officer, and Counter Drug Upgrade (CDU) Special Projects Officer/Assistant Officer-in-Charge while completing deployments to Sicily, Iceland, and Puerto Rico/Panama/ Honduras. A qualified Mission Commander and Instructor Tactical Coordinator, he was selected as the Commander, Patrol Wing ELEVEN Association of Naval Aviation NFO of the Year in 1992. Commander Wheeler transferred to Patrol Squadron THIRTY in December 1993, serving as a NFO Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) instructor while completing duties as the Communications Officer, NFO NATOPS Evaluator, and NFO Training Officer before transferring to the staff of Commander, Carrier Group ONE in San Diego, California in December 1996. While assigned to CARGRU ONE, he served as the Communications Officer and Assistant Chief of Staff for Administration / Flag Secretary and qualified as a Staff Tactical Action Officer for Battle Group Operations. Returning to the Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Force, he joined Patrol Squadron FORTY FIVE in October 1999 for his Department Head tour, where he served as the Tactics Officer and Operations Officer while leading the transition to the P-3C Aircraft Improvement Program (AIP) variant before deploying to Sigonella, Sicily in support of Operations JOINT FORGE and DELIBERATE FORGE. issance Weapons Tactics Unit Officer-in-Charge. Rejoining Patrol Squadron THIRTY in November 2001, he led all post-FRS training for the P-3C community until his transfer to Commander, SEVENTH FLEET in Yokosuka, Japan in March 2003. Serving as the ASW Operations Officer, Current Operations Officer, and finally Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations / Fleet Operations Officer (N3), he coordinated all Western Pacific Naval Operations for 7 Task Forces, 66 surface ships, 11 submarines, and 86 aircraft in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM-Philippines, JTF-58, JTF-515, Expanded Maritime Interception Operations, and all Pacific Counter-Terrorism efforts. A qualified C7F/CJTF Battle Watch Captain, he was selected for operational command and joined Patrol Squadron TEN in May 2005. During his tour as Commanding Officer of the ¿Red Lancers,¿ Commander Wheeler executed critical Littoral Surveillance Radar System operations for theater commanders during Operation Iraqi Freedom and earned the ¿Golden Wrench¿ for maintenance excellence. Completing his tour as Commanding Officer in April 2007, Commander Wheeler reported to the National War College in Washington D.C. where he earned a Master¿s Degree in National Security Strategy. Commander Wheeler returned to command in November 2008, assuming the duties and responsibilities as Commanding Officer, Joint Provincial Reconstruction Team PAKTIKA, Forward Operating Base Sharana, Afghanistan. Commander Wheeler¿s military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (3 awards), Air Medal, Navy and Marine Corp Commendation Medal (4 awards), Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal (2 awards), and various service/unit awards.
