Tricia's Story

A tiny little secret: I didn't ACTUALLY graduate from Durango High School, though I still consider myself part of the DHS class of 1979. We moved to Denver the summer before our senior year and I went to Alameda HS. I hated it so much, I sort of bailed on my academic future-- took typing, Spanish, and cooking, and graduated one Friday in January. Three days later I started college at CU Denver. I took my time getting through college (kept taking time off to do things like a year at Hebrew U in Jerusalem, hitchhiking around Europe, living on a sailboat). Eventually I graduated from a physician assistant program at CU and pretty much left immediately for a three month tour as a health volunteer in Uganda (here is where the Gilligan's Island theme starts humming softly in your head). Three months turned to 22 years and I have not lived in the US since. I spent the first part of that time in a village health clinic in rural Uganda, then moved to a pediatric AIDS research project in the capital. Spent some time traveling, worked on a university ship and eventually fell in love with a British diplomat (or perhaps, in retrospect, I fell in love with the IDEA of a British diplomat), and he was next posted to Thailand. When we arrived in Bangkok I kicked around aimlessly for a couple of weeks, got a job stamping visas in the Embassy for $2 an hour,...Expand for more
then came across an HIV vaccine research center and hung up my stamp pad. After 5 years here, we were posted to London for two years and then decided to take up where we left off in Bangkok so we came back again. My job has lasted longer than the marriage did, but my three children are the best thing that ever happened to me, so that has worked out okay. He has now retired and is also here in Thailand, working as a tour guide for a mountain bike adventure company. We still go biking together, he keeps my computer running, and we are far better friends than we ever were when we were living together. So, in most ways, life is darn good. My job is fascinating (we are testing HIV vaccines in high risk populations around Pattaya) and my kids are thriving (we live near a large American ghetto where their school is, so they pretty much visit Thailand on the weekends). What I miss about the US (and soak up like a sponge when we visit) are blue skies, stunning scenery, skiing, being able to easily strike up a conversation with a stranger, seasons, good Mexican food, a range of theater and movies, handsome men I can look in the eye, and shops that stock shoes my size. Eventually I am sure I will make my way back there again. (Oh, hey.. sorry that you won't be able to shake that stupid Gilligan's Island song from your head for the rest of the day).
