Troy's Story

Motorcycles, girlfriends, and drive-in movies are so far in the distant past that I have a hard time remembering them. But what great times those were. I wouldn't trade them for the world. I still look for a challenge, and that is reflected in my work and our lives. I never knew what I wanted to be, exactly, so maybe that's why I have tried such varied approaches to life. My mom worried that I might turn out to be too creative; my dad was a commercial illustrator. My dad thought I might end up as a ditch digger, just interested in the simplest of things. I just wanted to do something different from what my family did. In college I found myself in art classes every semester. But I had an interest in high technology as well. It turned out that I became a photographer, which suited me just fine. Over the years, I learned to brew beer. In the mid-90's I got the idea that I could develop a microbrewery - not a brew pub, but a place where I could concentrate on brewing the very best ales, then sell them on the open market. That idea was a good one, and I worked on the plan for a number of years. I got help on the project from unexpected places, not the least of which was one of our own, Tracey Wolf. Her dad had a beer distributorship back in the day, and Tracey helped me understand some of the complexities of the industry. Sadly, that idea did not make it. I still enjoy a well made beer, and drink them whenever I ...Expand for more
can. My work has been challenging and expressive. I owe most of my abilities to see beyond the obvious to my dad. He never thought I had that much "vision" but I think I have proven him wrong. My wonderful wife, Mary, has also been part of my ability to realize my strengths. Mary and I have lived in the back country of Georgia, ad a short time in Arkansas. But for most of our lives, we have been in Dallas. The Georgia period, was due to my military service with the US Naval Air Reserve. We spent three years there on active duty, living on the cheap in the foothills near Kenasaw Mountain. In Dallas we lived near the same neighborhoods where we lived as kids. Today, we live out in Kaufman, Texas, raising a herd of Alpacas. I could not imagine a better place for us. Speaking of Alpacas, Mary and I have started building our herd, on the ranch, Timber Lodge Alpacas. Our young Junior Herdsire, Treasure of Airlie, has done very well in competitions over the past two years. At Nationals this year, his fleece placed second behind a very valuable and well known male's fleece. We are very proud of Airlie, and look forward to his breeding career. In the meantime, we have acquired a herdsire from Idaho to be the genetic wizard on our ranch. Snowmass Chaccoyo, is our ace in the hole. His genetics package, his confirmation, and and his presence work together to make Chaccoyo a special male in this region of the country.
