Trudie's Story

Life After high school, I graduated in 1953 from Georgia Teachers College(now Georgia Southern University)with a BS in Education with my major in English. I taught high school English for 4 1/2 years before starting a family. After 4 years out of teaching, I added Elementary Education to my certification and stayed mostly in 6th grade language arts for the rest of my 30 years of teaching. Along the way, I had 4 sons. My husband, Mershon, and I have been married for 52 years. We have lived in Waycross most of our married life and are active in our church and other community activities. I am a substitute adult Sunday School teacher and sing in the choir. Also, I am past president of the Waycross Exchangette Club. I like to read, do crossword puzzles, cross-stitch, and visit our 8 grandchildren whenever possible. I retired in 1988 and have enjoyed making 4 great trips with my husband and another couple. The first was a 50th Anniversary of D-Day tour. Then we did an Alpine tour to northern Italy, Switzerland, and Austria. Next was a river cruise going from Vienna, Austria, to Amsterdam in The Netherlands. Then we made a trip beginning in St. Petersburg, Russia, and going from there to the capital cities...Expand for more
of Finland, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. We also had the privilege of being in Washington, D.C., for Memorial Day week-end 2004 for the dedication of the World War II Memorial. This was a very special occasion for us since my husband served in the army then, landing in Normandy on Omaha Beach and staying in Europe for the duration of the war. Mershon and I have also made a tour of the Northwest National Parks and Nova Scotia and the surrounding area. In September of '07 we took a trip to the Northwest National Parks. I had the bad fortune to fall and break my shoulder on the 4th day out on a 17 day trip. It was a hairline fracture, so with my arm in a sling, I made the rest of the trip. These have all been wonderful experiences that this south Georgia girl never could have imagined being a part of her life. Also, as an only child, I never dreamed of having 4 sons, 5 grandsons, and 3 granddaughters as a wonderful part of my life. I was also fortunate to still have my mother living here in Waycross in a nursing home and still very mentally alert until she passed away at age 99. God has been good to my family and I thank Him for the wonderful life that He has given me. (Updated December 8, 2008)
