Valerie's Story
Valerie received a BA in Chemistry from Saint-Mary of the Woods College in Indiana and a MS from Purdue University.
In 2001 she retired from Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ, where she had worked for 34 years. While at the Labs her research included identifying a novel way for characterizing solder alloys, assisting in the development of a stabilization package for polyolefin copper insulate that gave superior performance, crafting a procedure for reproducibly measuring the oxidative stability of polyolefins, developing a high temperature coating for optical fibers. She has authored 41 publications, edited two books, and has been granted 21 U.S. patents.
Valerie has had a parallel career in the American Chemical Society (ACS), where she has played a leadership role in many activities. She has chaired six national committees and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the ACS. In addition, she has organized and presided over two special presidential symposia which drew thousands of attendees. Several national and local section awards have recognized her contributions.
In 1997, Valerie became a Career Consultant for the ACS. In 1999 she established the North Jersey Section¿s Careers...Expand for more
in Transition Group. The Group meets monthly to address topics such as resume preparation, conducting job searches and ways for adeptly answering commonly asked interview questions. At national ACS meeting, she presents career workshops and reviews resumes.
Since retiring from the Labs, Valerie has conducted research on gender differences in the training and hiring of physical scientists. She published several articles on her research and spoken at national workshops. Currently, she is focusing on the graduate and post-doctoral training and subsequent hiring of female and Black/Hispanic chemists. She is an adjunct professor in the Chemistry Department at the College of St. Elizabeth¿s, in Morristown, NJ.
In 2007, Valerie was elected to the Board of Directors of the American Chemical Society and is serving on the Grants and Awards Committee, The Steering Committee for the Petroleum Research Fund, Public Affairs & Public Relations Committee, and the Graduate Education Advisory committee.
