Valerie's Story
Life
Things haven't worked out according to plan but I am happy and have two kids who are well on their way to standing on their own. I was married for more than 25 years and it's hard, changing directions at mid-life, and deciding to start over again but I have my health, a good job, my own home, and my cup is half full, not half empty.
College
I didn't do college at the normal time. I took a year of communication arts at Mohawk College right after Grade 12 and didn't go back until five or six years later when a coworker taking courses at Brock University was studying accounting. didn't do anything else for close to 10 years. By that time, my kids were starting school so I went to class while they were in school and got my honours degree in Business Admin eight years later.
Not the easiest way to get a university education...
Workplace
I started off in accounting once I finally decided what I wanted to do when I grew up. It never really happens at 18. It takes years to find out.
I have worked in accounting both in Canada and the States and have had the chance to travel across Canada and to England and India with the government.
Still love crunching numbers... look for me to get back into public accounting.
Update February 2003 ~ As predicted, I am back in public accounting.
