Valerie's Story

Life I went to Rio Grande College and graduated in 1981. I got a teaching position in Kayenta, AZ and taught here for 12 years before my husband and I started a family. Now I homeschool our four kids and try to retain my sanity! He is a counselor at the middle school. Our school website is kayenta.k12.az.us . Belief System I had thought all my life that I was a Christian, though in reality, I didn't know what that meant. I went to a Catholic church until my parents divorced when I was 8. (The priest told my mom that she would burn in hell, so she figured, "Why bother?") I believed in God, but I didn't know who Jesus was. Then one day, when I was 30, I decided to read the Bible in order to prove my sister wrong about her beliefs, and somewhere in Matthew, I found my Savior! Lucky for me, my husband didn't think I'd lost my mind when I started attending a Bible study. We became regular church-goers for about 16 years, but find that church isn't always very uplifting. I want to show people that Christ is our judge and that we need to shut up and stop judging so much. We need to show love, care, heal, and bless people so that they will see Him in us. I'm certainly not perfect and so I'll work on the log in my own eye for awhile. I'm kinda tired of the pharisees, though. College My first roommate never showed up, my second roommate got pregnant within two months, and my third roommate joined a sorority, so I saw some disturbing things. She was nice, though, and at least finished out the year! My second year I had a roommate whose parents lived nearby and she never stayed at the college! I hardly ever saw her. Then I had a Japanese roommate and she was the greatest roommate I ever had.. named Chisako Hizama. The next year I had another Japanese roommate for part of the year. I hardly ever saw her between me hanging out with my boyfriend and her hanging out with hers. I spent most of my time with my boyfriend, Michael. We met my freshman yea...Expand for more
r when he was stalking me. He had looked up my name and called me by name the first time I met him... scared the bejebbers out of me! We were good friends for about half of my freshman year, and then things started to change. I liked him and he liked me, but we each didn't know how the other felt! Eventually we figured it out and the rest is history. I really loved the Rio Grande campus and small town atmosphere (except for the gossip, which was annoying.) I loved the trees and the old buildings and even the fact that the college practically emptied on the weekends. I loved the Bob Evans Farm Festival, or Mud Festival, as we had referred to it. I loved hearing Michael sing at the talent shows. I should have gotten up there with him. He tried to get me to, but I was a chicken. We would sing in his room all night, with him playing the guitar and candles the only light. Those were the days. (We still sing, but with 4 little voices singing along, and not usually by candlelight... unless the electricity goes out.) College is where I have most of my lasting friendships from. I only have one strong friendship from high school, because I had changed school so often. Story starters- My favorite ways of relaxing are singing, writing stories, and playing on the computer. I have several heroes in my life. My mom, my stepdad, my grandma, and my husband. It would take me pages on EACH to describe how awesome they are! If I won $100 million, I'd give some of it to family, then spend the rest on charity, a house and college for our kids. I'd also travel with my husband and kids. My current age is 50. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be dead. I was so completely wrong. I didn't think I'd live to the turn of the century! My best friend would tell you I'm goofy, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as reserved. If I had one do-over, my husband and I would have been more frugal and bought land a long time ago!
