Vern's Story

Hi Folks, After school I went to college for a few years and was a DJ in bars-clubs and a little radio. This website asks where I was from 83-91. I don't quite remember all of it...Perhaps this is a good thing. Maybe some of you can help fill in the blanks. It seemed like long party intermixed with loud music and insane women. 1991- Traveled the US and a bit of Canada for many months then came back to Pgh and cut the long hair and was a commercial real estate broker for most of the 90s. I had an office downtown and did a good bit of development in the Cranberry and Wexford area. Yes, I am guilty. I hated the development and felt like a hypocrite. I needed a new plan. 1995 I quit smoking and went back to school while still working full time. I got involved with Search and Rescue in Pgh and started rock climbing again. 1997 - 2000 Finished school at the University of Pittsburgh and Center for Emergency Medicine. Ended up teaching there for awhile. Worked EMS as a paramedic in East Pittsburgh for some experience. 2000-Present: Moved to Estes Park, Colorado and bought a house. Rocky Mountain National Park is my back yard! I started TrailMed Wilderness Medicine as a side project that has grown. I teach and provide wilderness medicine internationally. Recently in 2007, I have run courses in Tanzania for guides on Kilimanjaro and in the Serengeti. I spent 2 months in the Annapurna Range of Nepal climbing as an expedition medic. I work part time as a flight paramedic on a helicopter north of Denver...Expand for more
. I also work as a medic in Estes Park and am active with Search and Rescue in Rocky Mountain National Park where I help run the medical program. 2007: I graduated as a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine through the Wilderness Medicial Society. I get out and tele ski about 40 times / year. I rock & ice climb and mountaineer a good bit. I do a little over 2,000 miles per year on my road bike and do a bunch of centuries in Colorado. I race mountain bikes too, well at least give it a good try. (Leadville 100 for 2008!) To escape the snow and altitude I SCUBA dive when I can. No kids, never married...came close a few times..the married part that is. If anybody ever wants to come and play just let me know. I have extra room. email: vmiller at trailmed dot com, call me at 970-577-8057. ...Or just to say hello. Old friends are always welcome! 2008 plans- I am leaving for the Ukraine in spring to do a little work and play - ski mountaineering. Going back to Cozumel to finish my divemaster cert in SCUBA. Planning Africa again for the month of December. Hoping to make it back to Gibsonia for a few days too this summer. Drop me a line if you want to get together for a bit. I am working on 3 books at the present and new medical programs for professional climbers and cyclists. Well, if you read all of this you must be sitting around the computer avoiding work. If you are in a cubical burn it down and get outside! Go Play!!! Cheers, Vern Progess is change, but not all change is progress.
