Veronica (Roni)'s Story

What has been going on since graduation from GKSN? Having dated all through nursing school, Bob and I married in November 1967 and moved to Waltham, MA. I began my nursing career as a Psychiatric Nurse at the State Hospital that was within walking distance of our apartment. I found myself pushed into a head nurse position within 3 month of hire as they moved RN’s into leadership roles for the treatment units. It was an amazing experience for me. I was intrigued with McLean’s Psychiatric Hospital (affiliated with Harvard Medical School) located a couple of miles in the opposite direction of our apartment and began working with a “transition unit” for about a year and a half. What a wonderful learning experience working in that progressive hospital. In October of 1968, we bought our first home in Billerica, MA and lived there until 1988. With a new home, a cat, and a dog, we opened our home to a foster son. We then added our own two children, Kristen and Robert. I worked part time in Medical and Surgical at a local hospital and then a Nursing Home for several years. When the opportunity presented itself at a CEU offering at a County Hospital with an on-site hospital based nursery/kindergarten, I applied and began Rehab Nursing as a supervisor of a high level quadriplegic transition unit. This was exciting because we were leading the state with rehabilitating stable quads who were attending college to gain new skills and transitioning them into the community to independent living with Personal Attendants. While working with the quads (one of whom was actually featured on 60 minutes with his personal attending monkey), I attended Emmanuel College at night to obtain a degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. I had responsibility for hiring, training, and managing the staff of the unit and worked with In-service Education for the hospital for over a year. When I left the County Hospital, I took my retirement money out; bought a boat that provided us with many happy weekends and summers on the Massachusetts North Shore, Essex River; and developed some long lasting friendships. As I continued to pursue my BS after leaving the hospital, my focus for elective courses was education. I obtained a certificate in occupational education during my last year at Emmanuel ans spent my days either studying or working as a substitute teacher at our local Vocational Technical High School. I then took a Civil Service Exam to qualify for a School Nurse position for local towns. Once the children were able to attend public school, I accepted a position as a school nurse in the town closest to us where I worked for 14 years. This worked out perfectly by providing time off with the kids and family. I continued to work in nursing homes and hospitals as an agency nurse during the nursing shortage, which was a great supplement to the low school nursing salary provided by the town. When our daughter, Kristen, graduated high school in 1989, we sold our home in Billerica, bought land in Rowley, and built our “cocktail napkin” home. That is what we called it because we designed it on cocktail napkins or anything else that was available when my husband and I could find time to sit and talk. Only after living in Rowley for several years did we find out that my father’s ancestors ...Expand for more
about 6 generations back had actually been two of the town’s early settler’s, and owned the farm across the street from our new home. Naturally I joined the historic society (and the Grange) in this quaint rural New England town. I had an opportunity to return to school, attending Northeastern University and obtaining a MS in Human Resources Counseling that allowed me to leave the school department which was 35 miles away from us and work nearer to home. Since moving to Rowley in 1989, I had been working part time in our local nursing home as a RN. In 1993 upon graduation I became the Staff Development Coordinator with HR responsibilities. I began to spread my wings and left in 1995 to enjoy a new full time career in Human Resources – working with a large medical provider group, an insurance broking firm, a rehabilitation hospital with satellite outpatient sites, and, lastly, a medical billing group. I enjoyed working outside the healthcare industry for about three years in high tech and manufacturing. I had an opportunity to utilize both my medical background and HR skills. However, in 2001, I was hit head on by a car that jumped the center line. After that, I suffered from chronic pain that made retirement necessary. My husband left the corporate world so we could spend time together and enjoy life. My son had moved away to Oxnard, CA after graduation and and fallen in love with a wonderful woman from Peru named Claudia. They married in 2001 and eventually Bob and I began spending winters in Oxnard visiting with the happy couple and taking care of their two dogs (who have since passed) when they visited in Peru each year. They now have two sons. Mattias was born in January of 2010 and Lucas was born in July of 2012. My daughter, Kristen, has been living in Merrimac, MA since the late 1998. In 2007, when she became disabled with MS, we sold our home and moved and rented a small apartment about one-half mile from her. Kristen possesses an amazingly positive attitude about life. Bob is designing plans to build a carriage house at her home (our new “cocktail napkin house”), and we are hoping to break ground before 2013. I would love to move in before we head off to California for the winter. Our "family" now includes a little (8.5 pounds) Chinese Crested Powder Puff rescue we adopted in Terre Haute, Indiana March 17, 2010 on our way home from visiting in California. Benji is a quiet dog who likes to be with us as we travel taking road trips often. We're looking forward to visiting with family in St. Petersburg, FL this October of 2012 when we come to my first GKSN Reunion.l The first reunion of mine that I ever attended was in August of 2004 in Fort Myers. You may not remember, but that was Hurricane Charley’s visit to Southwest Florida. We had a wonderful time anyway with our flashlight bonfire and “leftovers from many freezers left without power”. This was a memorable reminder for those of us who lived through Hurricane Donna while we were in entering High School in August/September of 1960. Both Charley and Donna were noteworthy storms for me. Bob and I are looking forward to catching up with our GKSN friends at the 2012 reunion this October and learning of their adventures along this journey called "Life". I think it will be great fun.
