Vickie's Story
Following high school, I attending BJC for one year, UND for 3 years, graduated with a BS in nursing, and got married. My husband farmed near Leonard, ND for 16 years. I worked as a nurse on and off. We had three children.
In 1992, we moved to Winner, SD where my husband was the manager of a fertilizer plant and I worked as a staff nurse at the nursing home. At this time, he is the energy/safety manager at the local Country Pride Cooperative and I'm the MDS coordinator at the Winner Regional Healthcare Center - Long Term Care.
Our daugter, Heidi, lives near LeSeuer, MN and works at an assisted living center. She is an SDSU graduate.
Our son, Jon, lives here in Winner. He and his wife, Haley, graduated from SDSU. He works as an agronomist for Jorgensen Land and Cattle. Haley works as a preschool teacher for children with disabilites in Mission, SD. They have two children, Aiden and Lilly. That makes me a grandmother - and loving it.
Our youngest son, Karl, graduated from SDSM&T and works as a safety engineer for Nucor Steel in Norfolk, NE.
I always wanted to be a nurse when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were right.
If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have friends, information, and energy to be able to deal with the day-to-day.
My heros were my grandfather, aunt, and uncles who were involved in the healthcare field.
If I could improve my home, I'd remodel my bedroom and add on a bedroom. My dream home would be circular.
If I could see a teacher, again, it would be Mr. Knaak - but ...Expand for more
he died.
If I won $100 million, I'd give 1/2 of it to my kids, then spend the rest on church, schools and bills.
Mike and I were both Greeks in college. It was a great life of parties and friends we've kept for life.
I must say, I'm a happy camper. I'd love to go to Germany with someone who speaks the language well, and look up family history.
My current age is 56. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be dead. I was so completely wrong.
I hope to continue working until our bills are paid and we can afford to retire.
I have no idea where my first crush is. (Kindergarten - Paul Bergen - moved.)
My best friend would tell you I'm a good listener, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as aloof.
I really have no style, I was wearing the same clothes I wore in high school and college until about 5 years ago when I started gaining weight. So now I've been buying new clothes. I don't care about style.
The weirdest job I have had was selling underwear one summer at Norby's in Grand Forks.
I share my home with my husband which I find comfortable.
I have a trophy for swimsuit competition in the Miss Grand Forks pageant and the Miss Grand Forks trophy for 1972.
I wouldn't do anything differently. I believe the good Lord has been guiding my life.
In 10 years, I hope to be ready to retire. I'm going to get there by working hard.
I think that classmates would be surprised that I've been in a field doing farmwork, performed in plays in our local community playhouse, and gained weight.
