Vicky's Story
Life
Hello, all, from Gig Harbor! FaceBook me at Vicky Young S. I am still teaching at a local Middle School, this year I am a Reading Specialist and 8th grade Literacy teacher, as well as teaching the gifted Literacy program. I passed my National Boards and am enjoying the benefits. It is still so weird being the teacher instead of driving the teachers crazy (boy, is payback a beotch!)and it brings back many fond memories of our years together. Many of the faces are different but the jokes, tricks and general shinanigans are virtually the same. My latest pursuit is creating a weekly literacy podcast with my students, which is really fun!!! (Thanks, Jay and Jack!!!) I am also creating reading curriculum in conjunction with our NASA Explorer School Program. I just finished training to teach AP Literature at the High School level and have been intimately involved in writing and revising our state's Writing assessment for middle schoolers. I am also very involved in our local and state teacher's union. On the personal side, I divorced after 13 years of marriage 10 years ago and all of my kids are grown up now---2 in college, another working as a "chef" (I think that really means prep cook) and the oldest experiencing many struggles. Only my daughter is still at home, although she is gone all summer as a YMCA camp counselor-lucky for me only 9 miles from home so I still see her a lot, but I must admit that I am really struggling with the empty house syndrome. It's like, after 27 years of being 24/7 "Mom", especially "single Mom" --what do I do now?!? What CAN I do now!?! What CAN...Expand for more
'T I do now!!!(besides buy in bulk at Costco...) It's sort of like graduating all over again.
Strange. Quiet. Interesting. Unsettling. Superserious. Scary. Inspiring and exciting!!! Did I mention quiet?
We are all outdoorsy, and enjoy travel during the summer, and NPR, Bill Maher, LOST and "24" during the 9 rainy months. Now that I am a NBCT I am hoping to teach overseas in the next year or two--hopefully in a place where I am really needed, maybe Africa, where my university is heading up new schools in Namibia and training reading teachers courtesy of a grant from - who else--Norway. It has taken a lot of resolve for me to not take a year off to go help out the schools in New Orleans, and I collect and ship off surplus textbooks and supplies to help out there with my students. But my dream is still to move to Hawaii, teach High School on Maui and bodysurf -- Obamarama style.
Hope life is treating each of you well. I can't explain, I can't complain, I still fiddle about, and life's been good to me so far...if you know what I mean. Breathe. My aim is true. SPARKS!!!
Seriously,
have a great 2009 and hope to see everyone at the next BHS reunion. I can almost see your smiling faces and smell In-N-Out burgers.:) Love and peace and Keep Burbank Beautiful!
