Valerie's Story
I was in the first class of eighth graders at Arroyo. I remember Mr. Carmichael, Mr. Fischer, Mr. Casson, Mr. Anton, and Mr. Lloyd. Had a small part in "Stardust", played flute in Band one year, ran track and CC, was in Red Jackets and CSF. Moved to Colorado in summer '82.
I was only two years at Thornton. I ran Cross Country, celebrated Saturnalia and Mr. Clark day, learned to play violin in the orchestra and had some small parts in some plays. During out senior year ('84) my parents moved back to CA, so right after graduation I was hauled out of there too.
Went to the University of the Pacific in CA; graduated with a BA in Sociology/Anthropolgy. I wasn't at my graduation, because I went to study abroad my senior year, and I didn't come back. I lived in Japan a couple of years. I studied Japanese, Japanese religions and Aikido. After a brief stint bar-hostessing, I taught English conversation. I met Ananda Marga, a socio-spiritual group based in India. I did some in-depth yoga study with AM in Okinawa and in Calcutta in '88, and worked in the AM preschool in Tokorozawa (...Expand for more
near Tokyo) in '89.
I studied at AM's International School of Social Service in Sweden for a year and half, and became a nun in '91. I was posted to Taipei, but the climate there was just horrible for me. (I say anywhere in Taiwan is better than Taipei.) I was reposted back to Tokorozawa in '92 and stayed there 4 years. Near the end of those four years I renounced renunciation and had to find my way back to the Ordinary World. (Yes, the Duran Duran song came out just about that time. I found the last verse particularly helpful.)
I moved to Sapporo, then the small town of Kitami, still teaching English. I met my husband in Kitami, but he's not Japanese, just another traveling American. I moved to Portland, Oregon to be with him, and now we have two bright and wonderful boys. (I'm not bragging; when Heaven wants to punish you, they send you intelligent children!)
I got my Masters of Education in '04. My husband bought an 1880's hotel in a small Eastern Oregon town. They needed a music teacher, so I learned to teach Music. (Thank you, Mr. Harris and Tri-M!)
