Vikki's Story

Life After graduation I went to college in Port Angeles and earned an AA degree. I then moved to Edmonds and attended Central Washington University to earn a BA in pre-law. After a year of that I decided I would rather be working than going to school so I applied to the Washington State Patrol, and was hired in 1989. I worked in the Bremerton Communications Center, where I was a Communications Officer 2 (the lead operator and supervisor of the shift) until 1996 (I was Communications Officer of the Year in 1993 for District 8) when I quit to move to Tennessee. I had met the woman of my dreams over the internet - flew down here for a visit, and didn't want to leave! We bought a house in 1998, had a commitment ceremony in 2000. We tried to start a family in 2001-2002, I was trying to get pregnant via artificial insemination, but it never worked - I later found out why - I was diabetic and didn't know it (I had lost 90 pounds - very easily I might add - in attempt to be in a healther place to get pregnant) my blood sugar was out of control. Luckily I never got pregnant because we divorced in 2003. A typical life like any of yours, except I'm gay. My Mom and Dad (my step-dad who raised me since I was 8) moved down here as well in 1996. They were retired and wanted a change of scenery. My dad had gone through many health issues - open heart surgery, stents, and a pace maker. He passed away from a massive heart attack June 30, 2004. My mother is 78 years old, still going strong despite the loss of her partner of 28 years and one true love. We are best friends, she is very active, travels around visiting family that lives in Alabama, Oklahoma and Oregon. In October of 2005 I got a nice 3 bed 2 bath condo and moved my mom in with me. I have two cats - Cleo is 7 and Bubba is 4. I recently lost my boxer Duchess to an illnes, she was 10 1/2 years old. I have a new puppy, his name is Zeke. He's almost a year old and a spitfire! I was laid off from my job after 10 years with the same company on June 15, 2007. Needless to say I was really pissed and hurt. I'm involved with the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, I've participated in it in some capacity every year I've been here - one year I was on the board that organized it for Knoxville. My mom and my sister are both breast cancer survivors. My sister and brother-in-law visited Forks about a y...Expand for more
ear ago, they said not much has changed. I can't imagine living there in the middle of nowhere. I haven't been back in over 18 years, and I don't miss it at all. If I'm ever back in Washington I may drive through just to see what it looks like and to have a Sully burger, that is if it is still around. Beginning January 14th 2008, I will start school once again - this time going for a degree in nursing. I hope to be an RN by spring 2010. School I went to school in Forks from Kindergarten through 7th grade. My family moved to Oregon and I attended the 8th and 9th grade in Salem Oregon. We then moved to Wilsonville Oregon where I attended 10th and half of the 11th grade then to my horror we returned to Forks and finished the 11th & 12th grades there. It was culture shock coming back to a small town after living in two huge cities that had more than one school in them. I had taken many of the classes offered and had to settle for most of what I enrolled in. My saving grace of moving back was Ann Watton - what an awesome teacher - If you didn't learn anything from her you must have been brain dead. College Dorm life at Penninsula Community College - what a great time in my life!! I loved school, I met a lot of great people that I am still friends with to this day. I spent a year after graduating from Penninsula at Central Washington University but dropped out after not doing well - I had to work full time and go to school full time at night - needless to say not a good combo for me. Fast forward to January 2008 - now I will be attending Roane State in Oak Ridge, TN working toward a nursing degree and becomming an RN. Workplace My first job ever was as a dishwasher at the Vagabond in Forks - I enjoyed it actually. Then I went to college and was on the work study program and worked in the library and business office for the whole time I went to school there. When I moved to Edmonds, WA to attend CWU, I worked for Medicustom Products Co. where we manufactured the metal plates that are on defibrilators. Great job, great people. Then I was hired by the Washington State Patrol - my greatest accomplishment - I loved that job - hated the pigs they called our supervisors and District Manager - the "good ole boy system" doesn't work for me! They still work there, if that's what you want to call it - and from what I hear nothing has changed.
