Vincent's Story

Life I had hoped to attend our 40th reunion this year. It would have been my first! I just found out my daughter's HS parents weekend conflicts, so now I am not sure I will make it to NJ (from CA). I would like to reconnect with you all so will try to with this post. You knew me as Vincent Onorato. The name change is a long story! When my wife, Holly, and I married in 1978, we decided to share a name, a middle name (Alfait) which is an acronym for a phrase which captured our relationship. We were a confirmed child-free couple for many years, but when our daughter was born in 1994, we changed Alfait to our last name so we would all share the same family name. I have had a great life for most of it and a great tragedy. My life seemed charmed for many years. In a nutshell, I met Holly right after college. She was a perfect compliment for me, all I could imagine or hope for in a life partner-- Holly helped me become much of what I am today. After college we travelled the US for three years in an old camper, stopping to work in therapeutic camping programs(Outward Bound model) for emotionally disturbed kids. Lots of adventure. Great experience. Holly and I married in 1978, pooled our money and went to Africa for a photo safari for our honeymoon, then straight to Hawaii where we lived for 23 years. I was fortunate to be awarded a US Public Health training grant to attend the University of Hawaii Ph.D program in Clinical Psychology which I received in 1981. I had a terrific practice with Holly (she had an M.A. in psych), taught in our Ph.D program in Clinical Psychology at UH Manoa, and did a fair amount of expert witness work since I specialized in head injured, physical and psychologic trauma patients. Life in Hawaii was as great as you might imagine. I felt marrying Holly was the best decision/luck I could make/have. We worked together, travelled together, played together. We were both marathon runners and avid ocean kayakers. I later became an Ironman triathlete and tri...Expand for more
athlete coach. We were so fortunate to be surprised with a daughter and kicked ourselves for not having a family sooner. Fiona became a huge part of our lives and blended smoothly into the love Holly and I shared. The bubble burst when Holly was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999. She died in 2005, after many difficult years for us. I have had a very tough time, but have battled grief every day to try to reclaim my life without Holly. Fiona has all the wonderful qualities of her mom and is my primary life focus. I try to make up as much as I can for the loss she suffered. She was the Valedictorian of her 8th grade class last year, won the Monterey County Science Fair, placed in the California State Science Fair, and earned a ballet pointe lead in Nutcracker (Clara) for this year's show at Camel, CA's Sunset Center. She is a kind, nurturing, unpretentious, fun kid. I left Hawaii, my practice, sport, friends in 2000 to move to Carmel where years earlier Holly and I had purchased a home for our retirement. When it became clear Holly would likely not survive cancer, she wanted the opportunity to live in Carmel. It was great for her and I am glad we did it. Not so great for me after Holly died, since I was 3000 miles away from my home, friends, associates of 23 years. Carmel is a small, safe, beautiful town which Fiona loves. That is very important to me, so I am making a life here. I am in a relationship (great person/hard to start again-getting easier), ocean kayaking, hiking a lot, running, weight training, and rehabbing some injuries so I can train 100% and race triathlons again. I am very involved as a volunteer dad for Fiona's ballet program and school. Fiona and I are very close. I am so lucky to have her. Hope that is not TMI. I hope to hear from you. Contact me and visit if you travel through Northern Ca. Carmel is just north of Big Sur and 100 miles South of San Francisco. I'll sneak in a private contact.
