Vivien's Story
I lived in Orangeville for only 5 years but have so many fond memories. I had lived near Orillia for 5 years, before moving to Orangeville in Jan. 1959 and I finished Grade 6 at Princess Elizabeth School. Our family moved to Toronto June 1964, when I was 16. What an age to move and leave all your friends behind and then attend a large city high school. I found the transition very difficult and soon quit school. I started working in an office, full time. Fortunately, I went back to school, finished high school and after a year at college, my summer office job provided an opportunity to successfully test for the position of the companies new computer programmer. I studied computer languages and was 'shipped off' to I.B.M to convert our obsolete files to the new system.
Unfortunately, in less than a years time I became quite ill and was forced to leave work for almost 2 years. I very gingerly returned to work in 1971 starting with a few hours a week in a 'hamburger joint'. I was happy that I could be back working and the stress free job was an asset to my health. I eventually went on to work as a dining room waitress for many years.
I was able to do some traveling over the next few years.
Always one to plan ahead I bought a retirement property in a warm southern state, since I planned to retire when I was 45. Looking back I'm so glad that those plans didn't materialize.
When I was 29 I met my first husband. We had a small business just north of Toro...Expand for more
nto, about 25 miles from Orangeville and moved there in 1977, buying a house in the town 1979.(still live in the house) We had a son in 1980. Sadly my husband was killed in a car accident just after our son's second birthday.
I did find happiness again when my second husband and I had a baby boy in 1987. We separated when our son was 4 years old. I tried to keep my work schedule to part-time when ever possible.
I now have my own gardening business, designing, planting and maintaining perennial flower gardens. I love it, and I can work as much or as little as I want and I get the entire winter off. My friends say I probably won't retire because I enjoy it so much. Who knows!!
I am always working on projects around the house.
This winter I'm installing the new pine floor in the kitchen/family room (it has been delayed since 2005). My house was built in 1840 so now all of the downstairs will match the original pine floors upstairs.
My 25 year old son Tristan, was married Apr. 2010. They presented me with my first grand child, Liora, on their first wedding anniversary . We are overjoyed. My oldest son Geoff, is a classically trained singer in the style of Andrea Bocelli and Josh Grobin. He has singing gigs but as he says 'can't quit his day job yet'. My youngest son, is a chef, smart and personable.
My life is good. I love my children, I keep active and do things that I enjoy, have good friends and try to relax as much a possible.
