Walker Elton Marsh, Jr.:  

Life After graduation, I attended Louisiana State University (LSU) and graduated in 1976. Attended seminary at New Orleans Baptist and graduated in 1979. Served two churches in Tuscaloosa, AL and Yemassee, SC and joined the Navy Chaplain Corps in 1984. Retired from the Navy in 2004 as a Lieutenant Commander. I have served with numerous ships and lived both in Europe and Japan. Currently living in Slidell, LA. Completed my Ph.D. in Psychology in May 2003 and established a private marriage & family therapy practice, Northshore Family Counseling, LLC in April 2004. I married Joan Covington (Class of 1973) in 1976 and we just celebrated our 32nd anniversary. We have three children: Jarrod (age 25) who graduated LSU in May 2005 with a major in Physics. he received his Master's degree in Astrophysics in 2007 and is now working on his PhD in Astrophysics at Mississippi State University (MSU). The best thing is that he has a real job as a research assistant and they cover his tuition with scholarships. He is also an accomplished musician and played trombone in LSU Tiger Band for 7 years. He now plays in orchestras at MSU; Brendan (age 22) graduated from Northshore High where he was an All-State euphonium player. He is attending LSU and majoring in Chemical Physics and also plays in Tiger Band. He hopes to eventually fly jets for the USMC and get into the astronautics program. Erin (age 17) is a junior at Northshore High School. She is an All-State French Horn player (1st chair) and wants to major in music at LSU and play in the band. I would love to hear from any or all of my classmates and friends. Also interested in finding out about possible reunions, etc. I managed to miss all except the 5-year one due to my being elsewhere in the world - courtesy of Uncle Sam! School Can't say too much here. I will say, however, that Coach Morgan's algebra classes, Mr. Goeble's chemistry and physics were surely interesting - if not for the curriculum - the classmates. For those who were in Catherine Heard's Band - what else can be said. There was nothing quite like the Band trips! College After graduation from Walker High I did the following: Attended more school: -1972 - 1976 - Bachelor of Arts (Sociology) And more school: -1977 - 1979 - New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Master of Divinity (Preaching and Biblical Studies) And even more school: -1992 - 1993 - Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, IL - -Master of Theology (Psychology and Pastoral Counseling) And even MORE school: -1998 - 2000 - New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary - Master of Theology (Counseling Psychology) -2000 - 2003 - New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary - Doctor of Philosophy (Psychology) Then I published a book: -Dissertation Title: "A Comparison of Occupational Stress Levels Between Chaplains Working In Military and Hospital Settings). Became a "professional" -Licensed as a Professional Counselor - 2009. -Licensed as a Marriage & Family Therapist - 2002. Joined fancy sounding groups and professional organizations: -American Association for Marriage & Family Therapy (AAMFT) - Clinical Member -Louisiana Association for Marriage & Family Therapy (LAMFT - Clinical Member -American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC) -American Counseling Association (ACA) -Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA) -Military Officers Associationof America (MOAA) -American Legion Maybe one day I'll get a REAL job! Workplace After seminary, I took a position as Associate Pastor at West End Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa, AL. Stayed there for two years and moved to a pastorate in Yemassee, SC. Yemassee is a small, southern town. The most distinctive thing about it is that the Battle of Pocotaligo was fought there during the Civil War, and for many years it was the getting off place for the Marine Corp Recruit Depot at Parris Island, SC. The recruits would get off the train at Yemassee, get their first "friendly introduction" to their Drill Instructor, and be bussed 25 miles to Parris Island. It was here, among my retired Marine deacon's that I decided to go into the Navy chaplaincy. In January 1984, I went on active duty - see my military bio for details. After I retired from the Navy in 2004, I opened Northshore Family Counseling LLC in Slidell, LA. In addition to my private practice, I have worked as a Clinical Supervisor for civilian therapists working at the navy bases along the Gulfcoast, and done a lot of work in Critical Incident Stress...Expand for more
