Wally's Story
After graduation I spent summer and fall quarters at the U of W while working as an orderly at Harborview. I switched to Western for 2 quarters and
joined the army in the summer of 1965 and ended up in Viet Nam in January of
'66. I came home for 30 days in December of 66 and then went back to Nam for another 6 months. I spent my last military year stationed at Fort Lewis and living in Poulsbo. I got out in July of '68 and became ex-sergeant Oyen and an early Viet Nam Vet
against the war.
I returned to Western and saving the world until the fall of '69. I spent the winter of '69 and '70 on the North Slope in Alaska on a seismic survey c...Expand for more
rew and returned to Bellingham. I spent the next two years managing the old Kulshan Tavern and picking up a few more credits.
My partner at the time was from Oklahoma and wanted to be closer to her family so in 1972 we packed and moved to Gotebo, OK. I worked for my father-in-law for a while as a farm and ranch hand and then went to work at the local farmer's Co-op. In 1975, divorced, I moved to Grandfield, Oklahoma to manage the Farmer's Co-op Cotton Gin. That year I moonlighted on weekends as the doorman at a bottle club and bartender at a "beer joint".
In '76, faced with the prospect of another hot summer, I fled back to Bellingham.
