Walter's Story

This summer will make 31 years in the Pacific NW. It's beautiful here. The mountains, forest and ocean are all available and easy to get to.. - My son Stuart just turned 22. He made Eagle Scout in 2010, and he and I have experienced many advntures and backpacking treks together. He and I have done the 11-year old trek when he first joined the Troop (2007 Tenderfoot Trail - 18 miles over 3 full days), the 12-year old trek (2008 Alpine Adventure - was to be 35 miles but cut short due to lots of rattlesnakes), both Philmont Scout Ranch in NM (2010 trek - 56 miles on paper but 80 by GPS over 10 days) and the Northern Tier trek out from the Atikokan base to US base in Ely MN (2009 trek - 89 miles over 6 days) National High Adventure camps, along with an ocean kayaking trek in the Northern San Juan Islands (in Puget Sound) for our high adventure (2011 Trek - 45 miles over 5 days). This summer (2012) we went to Sea Base and sailed in the FL Keys. We also snorkeled and kayaked, plus visited the Dolphin Research Center. A really cool time...We now both have earned the "Triple Crown" award for attending all 3 BSA National camps. It's been quite an experience for both of us. He also staffed 2 years as an unpaid staff member at one of the Council Cub Scout camps teaching "Scout Skills", as well a few Winter Camps by Mt Rainier. He was also a paid Scout Camp Staff member for several summers. He also made Vigil Honor in the OA as well. - My daughter Kara is 24 and is now a 4trade teacher in San Antonio TX. She swam for Trinity in SA, and earned both her degrees from there, with a 5th year Masters program. I think the whole swim-team experience was great for her. In her 1st and 2nd years she got swimmer of the conference. I saw her last SCAC this Feb and she did very well again. Nothing seems to slow her down in any way, and her sports helped that... - Cathleen is still doing well at her job, and she enjoyed being a previous Swimming Official while Kara was in high scho...Expand for more
ol. We sometimes go out on our kayaks on a few of the local lakes, and have a blast, when the weather is beautiful. - I'm still at Boeing, and have been a Technical Fellow since 2005. I have had the chance to work on many diverse aerospace programs, and each has expanded my knowledge base of Structures and Materials. In my spare time, Scouting takes over, as I was the Scoutmaster of our Troop (we ave between the high 60's to mid 70's on Scout membership) for just over 3 years. It's now been 14 years that I've been a Scout Leader, covering several positions. It takes time but it's rewarding to see these youth mature into young men and know that you had a hand in making them a better citizen of the world. I am current in my Wilderness First Aid (WFA) training and I continue to be a Council/District Trainer for this class. I was the District coordinator for this for 6 years. I was also honored by the Order of the Arrow Lodge and did my Vigil in May 2012 for the Vigil Honor. My translated Native American name is "Explores the Outdoors" or Klatawa Lipiyi Klahanie in Chinook. I have been the District Advancement Chair and Eagle Coordinator for about a year now... - Our family has had some excellent camping trips - Yellowstone, WA coast, OR Coast, and others. We've seen all kinds of sights and vistas. Our recent vacation to the OR coast was just great and it's one of our favorite areas to always go to. We have also been to Mt St Helens. What a sight to see the aftermath of the eruption. - This is now "home" but I do miss the history of the Fairhaven area (and the East Coast in general) that covers the formation of our country, at times and look back on all that I did growing up doing the reenactments and such. We have a different history here, which is very rich in the 1st Peoples of the NW - it's just different, and I like that too. My son and I should be starting our button blankets (I'm making one as an example, but he can use his for the Order of the Arrow).
