Walter's Story

Life I joined the United States Air Force in December of 1965. By mid January 1966 I was off to technical school at Wichita Falls Texas. This is where I acquired the basic understanding of airplane flight, aerodynamics and basic functions of airplane systems. My four-year training at Lowell Trade School learning the automotive trade helped me greatly here. My tour at Sewart AFB Tenn was marked with my promotion Airman third, and second class including Airman first class Enlisted 1,2 and 3 (E-1-2& E-3) With the next promotion to E4 coming I was shipped off to The grand island of Guam in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. However, before that came about, Paula Sammons and I got married in Knoxville Tennessee. I shipped of to Guam; Paula went to Puerto Rico. Six months later a pregnant Paula came to Guam. Maria was born there, also Terry before returning to the states during which time Jenifer was born in Topeka Kansas. Only a year past and I was shipped off to Taiwan. ula and me by this time. We found it necessary to part ways after my return from this overseas tour. Returning from Taiwan and trips in and out of Southeast Asia / Vietnam, Thailand, Japan I was assigned to Elgin Air Force Base in Fort Walton Beach Fla. (Hurlbert Field) Hear at Hurlbert Field is where I worked of C-130A&E Gunships. This period was between 1972 and 1977. There I met the lovely Kitty Tolbert. We got married on November 1, 1975. We shipped out to Germany in February 1977 after being promoted to rank of Technical Sergeant. While in Germany I worked on C-130E'’s and earned my last promotion to Master SergeantE-7. After the three years in Germany, we moved to the great Sooner State of Oklahoma; being reassigned to Altus Air Force Base. Four or five years pasted and I had enough time in to retire at twenty years and two months in January 1986, and returned to Massachusetts where we live today. I'm a widower, but dating. Update: For the past 14.years Terri has been my partner and we live in Peabody, Ma.
