Walter's Story

Life I went to UGA after graduating and majored in Journalism/ French & Spanish. I later studied Translation and Interpretation at Université Jean Moulin in France, then went to work on my Masters in Linguistics in Puerto Rico, and later finished this degree at Georgia State University in Atlanta. After grad school I went to work in United Arab Emirates in a city called Abu Dhabi for a couple years. It was interesting working and living in the desert and traveling around the region. Due to proximities, I had the opportunity to visit Egypt, Kenya, India, Thailand, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the list goes on... I love traveling! I moved back to the States to direct a training program for Egyptian teachers at Georgia State University, and also had the chance to work as a visiting professor to Chinese and Taiwanese nationals in Business Communication for the GSU MBA Program while there. My work since Georgia State is now with the US Department of State. I started with them in 2003 and have been sent for work Saudi Arabia, Mexico, and Ecuador. I lived in Mexico City until last summer for two years and now am at my new assignment in Quito, Ecuador where I'll be until late summer 2006. My work is basically the same: lot's of public speaking, and travel. Basically Embassy PR stuff. Ecuador is a challenge. There is tremendous poverty here and the political situation is a bit unstable to say the least. Ecuador has had 12 Presidents in the past 10 years. My own project development can be rough at times, but this is a truly beautiful country. I live in a city that is nearly 10,000 feet high in the mountains and completely surrounded by several very active and close volcanoes. Over the years I've had to relocate and travel a lot for work. My field is Educational Training and Development (teacher training mainly). The good thing is I've seen a lot of different countries and have met people from all over the world which is what I always wanted to do. Mexico won my heart though and after this brief assignment, I will pick up where I left off and get re-asigned there. My dog, Savannah still remains at home there as well as many friends, etc... I see myself probably making it my permanent home soon. Language is no longer a problem having lived and worked in these countries for a while. The trick is maintaining my southern accent from Albany...Expand for more
, GA. While my Spanish is getting better, I find myself losing my "twang". I return to the States for obvious vacations and holidays and this includes visits to Albany, GA believe it or not. I'm happy now because they have Starbucks w/ wireless internet and jet service at the airport. This makes things so much easier for me. After a 25 minute flight to Atlanta, I'm easily on my way... to wherever it may be. Anyway, this is me in a nutshell! The "Classmates" site is interesting especially when one is so far away from home. I little taste of American culture and a bit of the past is always welcomed. Workplace High School 1. Roast Beef Boy at Hardee's in Albany GA (that lasted a month) College 2. Office Assistant at UGA Dance Department (that was cool) 3. Private English teacher in France (it helped to pay the bills.... couldn't work legally) 4. Chinese Food Delivery Guy (sucked!) 5. Interviewer of poor black families in the South for some UGA research project (the money was good, but it really sucked... I felt guilty doing it. 6. Pizza Hut something (I think I did everything there, but boy that really really sucked!) I stayed there way too long. 7. Advertising guy for the UGA newspaper (I made 35 dollars total). 8. Cable TV Company employee during my last year of college. Cool because I was studying journalism at the time and the salary was good. After College 9. First newspaper job! Can you believe it was in Albany GA? I hated it and locked my office door in order to sleep at my desk because it was so boring. This lasted for 4 or 5 months. I worked Tuesday thru Saturdays (I arranged the schedule that way) and used my time off to look for jobs in Atlanta. 10. Crystal Springs Bottled Water Company. Worked here the semester before I started grad school. Weird job!!! Grad School 11. Internship at Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta in PR. (Mad Cool Internship) 12. Coordinator for Teacher Exchange Programs (Super excellent job!) After Grad School 13. Spanish teacher for a year at rich prep school (ugh!). 14. Academic Coordinator in United Arab Emirates for the Ministry of Education! Nice one! 15. Director of Teacher Training at GSU. I learned a lot and loved it! 16. Dept. of State Gigs: Saudi (hot weather), Mexico (wonderful!), Ecuador (counting the days!)
