Walter's Story
After graduating from SHS, I went to Navy Basic Training at RTC Orlando, FL and then on to Quartermaster "A" school. I went to my first ship in Feb of 1990 - USS Knox out of Long Beach. CA.
After my first enlistment was completed, I decided to reenlist in the Navy Reserves and see how I would do in the civilian side. I worked full time for a security firm in downtown Boston and used my GI Bill to attend Computer Learning Center in Somerville MA. I graduated and was hired by Parametric Technology Corporation in Waltham, MA. A few years later, I started working for Lotus Development Corporation, now IBM Software Group, providing technical phone support for Lotus Notes and Domino. I have been doing ...Expand for more
that ever since.
After September 11th, I was mobilized with my Reserve unit at that time, MIUW 202 and deployed to Souda Bay, Crete. We provided surveillance of the harbor and fueling piers and ensured our fine Navy ships could refuel in safety. We returned in 2002 shortly before the Iraq war began.
I currently live with my wife Briget and daughter Caitlin in Berkeley Springs, WV working remotely for IBM. I picked up a part time job as Loss Prevention at a nearby KMART just because I didn't feel busy enough and I needed some excitement. I am still in the Navy Reserve, currently with Beachmasters Unit Two out of Little Creek, VA. I serve as a LARC-V engineer and Lead Petty Officer for the unit.
