Wayne's Story
Life
Here is a little story I don't often tell. I Graduated High School, puttered around in a two year pretending to study for lithography. Then I stop pretending and joined the Navy. I always planned on joining the military just didn't know which.
Went to, "Boot," in Great Lakes in the winter of '87. It taught this California boy that snow may look pretty but it's alot of work to live in it.
After Boot Camp I headed to GM 'A' school, and 'C' school to study a trade that would come in handy for about 7 months in the fleet.
By '88 I transfered to Newport Rhode Island just in time for Med cruies. To be fully truthful I was somewhat of a dirt bag when I hit the fleet. People like GMC gave me some schooling before sending my ass down to deck. I served alongside BM1 Joe Tessier, BM2 Dave Debona, and a host of fine Boatswains mate through a Legal OP, Unitas, and finally the Decommision of the Aylwin.
After Aylwin Decommisioned I was tranferred as a BM3 to the Simon Lake. At the time of my arrival she was preparing for dry dock. She just arrived from Holy Loch. While there I was apart of 2nd Div, tyrant of the aft hold, DCPO, and boy freind to SN Bush.
After Simon Lake I went across europe to USS McClusky in Honshu Japan. I actually met them while they were in Baharain in what would turn to be...Expand for more
the first of 5 visit to the blessed persian gulf. The Baharain I remember wasn't the condo community that it is now. Nope, the only thing there was the Hilton, seemed a cruel joke to call it that. For entertainment we had the Desert Dome. It wasn't the walnut trimmed club that we know now. There was a bar and a big patio. There was a game room and an Ice Cream bar that I don't remember anyone ever using. Baharain was truly the Alcohol Support Unit of the Persian Gulf. Of course back then Uncle Sugar wasn't loved either. I talked to people that would relate stories of dodging traffick aimed diliberately at them. I could go on and on about the beauty that is Baharain but this paragraph about the McClusky I was aboard the Mighty Mac from '93 to Dec '95. I remember duty days in which I would work until 2100 then stand shore patrol until 0300, if I were lucky I would catch 3 hours of sleep and go to work, It was great stuff, and I am not being fascicious. I was in the state of mind that what did not kill me made me stronger. Of course I later realized that what did not kill me could also maim. I arived a BM3 and left as a BM2. I remember BM2 Coker, asshole to say the least, but bosses are paid to be. SN Kenny, of whom I have kept in touch over the years. BM2 Vance, now retired and last seen living in Imperial Beach.
