Wayne's Story
Life
I have been teaching English in Tokyo for nearly 20 years and am nearing completion of a masters degree in education (TESOL) at Temple University, Japan, and hope to teach at university after graduating. For nearly 10 years I played racquetball competitively in my spare time and was nationally ranked here as high as No. 67. I'm playing more squash, though, these days, just for fun. I also enjoy foreign travel visited 17 different countries--mostly around Europe and Asia--most recently Austria (for the Salzburg Festival) and Guam (paragliding and kyaking).
School
This is the place where we talk about our funniest, happiest, and craziest school memories. As for crazy moments, one I can recall is us pulling an 18 foot tall homecoming float on its side nearly two miles from Doug Steigerwald's huge patio (a perfect place to build a float of that scale) near Hoover Jr. High, through the early morning streets of Lakewood to school. (Ross Dodson will have to fill me in on the technicalities of whether this was legal or not at the reunion.) Spirit's Alive in '75. The float was a Lancer spirit appearing out of magician's hat and it won the Key Club first prize in the float contest. There's more to include here, which I hope to get back to before the renuion. m the classes and clubs I was in, I'd especially enjoying seeing Lori Wolpert, Dave Friscia and Eric Schlagel, any of the Key Club Members, and many others, as well.
College
After Lakewood, I went to LBCC where my concentration was in foreign language (French and German). There, I was president of the Honor Society and worked at the library. Dr. Fennell who I had for a film class (but who I also helped out in theater projects) was probably my most influential teacher. After graduation, I continued studying foreign language at UCLA, finally receiving my bachelor's degree from CSULB in Comparative Literature from a department founded by August Coppola, elder brother of Francis Coppola. At CSULB I co-wrote, co-directed and performed in docudrama for the Alternate Theater Festival. I was also able to make use of my art background in creating oversize stylized masks for some of the characters. Dr. Roddick, a visiting theater professor from the University of Manchester was a great inspiration in this project, and my theater and film interests in general. After doing some graduate work at CSULB, I entered the MFA program in film production at USC where I made several super-8 and 16 millimetre short films, including a documentary and an animated film using pixilation.
