Wayne's Story
The short version:
In high school, I was an uninvolved dreamer, lacking the confidence to set my own goals, and instead doing a poor imitation of my friends’ behavior. Starting college at NU, I pledged a fraternity, hoping to learn to be ‘one of the guys’, but it didn’t take. Then I read the opening pages of “Atlas Shrugged” emphasizing the need to pursue our own interests and talents, rather than trying to fulfill the expectations of others. It wasn't that this was a new thought for me, but it was 'the final straw' that got me committed to a big change.
While in HS, I had already joined US Navy Reserves and completed basic training. I withdrew from college (on full ride scholarship status), left everything familiar behind, and entered active duty, starting with navigation school in San Diego. Next was a year in the Mekong Delta, followed by a return to Vietnam on a Navy destroyer. During this time, I started to appreciate that life can be the opportunity for an ongoing adventure. You learn who you are and what you are capable of by planning, committing, and accepting challenges; not by following what is familiar. I do not believe in allowing random events to control destiny. While pursuing your own interests, you meet others who share those interests.
I completed my engineering degree at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1971 and had a job awaiting me in Portland, Oregon. Along the way, I had met this beautiful girl, Dawn, with similar values and independent budget like myself; we married to share our awaiting adventure.
Then, we had a year in Oregon, followed by 3 months traveling the US, two years in Northern California, then a career switch. 1974-78 at Creighton dental education during which I joined the US Army, and in return they paid for my dental training. 1978-79 in South Carolina, 1979-82 on the At...Expand for more
lantic coast of Panama. Our two children were born 1977 & 79. Dawn and I liked the adventure and variety of military life enough that we decided to continue a military career.
1982-85 we were in Alabama, 1985-88 we were at Monterey, California, 1988-91 Bavaria, 1991-93 in The Netherlands, 1993-97 Virginia, 1997-99 at Walter Reed Hospital in DC, and 1999-2002 in northern New York state. Along the way, I received three years of specialty training and advanced in responsibility to where I was in charge of the entire Walter Reed dental clinic with 20+ dentists.
At retirement from active duty, we moved to Colorado Springs where we still live, although we have lived at four different addresses here. 2002-2021 I worked part-time at Peterson AFB; greatly enjoyed because the patients and staff were wonderful, and the hours were flexible. No patients are more deserving than our military.
We have traveled widely from each home location (to 50+ countries) and continue to self-plan multiple overseas trips every year. We recently finished an 8-week trip to Sri Lanka, Indian Ocean (Seychelles, Maldives) and South Africa, although staying closer to home is looking more attractive to us.
Notes:
1979-82: US Canal Zone including our Army base was turned over to Panamanian control of dictator Noriega, the US flag no longer was flown.
1988-93: A very active period in European history. The Berlin Wall was toppled, Eastern Europe was freed from Soviet rule, Desert Storm occurred including units from our Army base, Yugoslavia splintered launching a Balkan war.
1999-2002: World Trade Towers in NY were destroyed (only a few months after we stood atop them) and our invasion of Afghanistan began. The 10th Mountain Division from our Army base was the first major unit into Afghanistan, and I attended the initial planning meeting for that deployment.
