Wayne's Story

Life I live in a new residential subdivision in Boise, ID. From 90-2006, I lived in Garden Valley, in the mountains near Boise. It was originally a mining area, then timber, now recreation. I own the local newspaper there, The Idaho World. The newspaper is fun, but does not pay the bills, so I also work full time for the Idaho PUC. Garden Valley is beautiful, but the 60 mile daily commute to Boise for my full time job was too much, so we moved to Boise. Teri, my wife, had 5 kids when we met, and we were surprised (I had a vasectomy 22 years earlier) with a wonderful daughter, Veronica, in 1999. Life now revolves around her. Veronica is a sheer pleasure. She has me wrapped around her finger, and I do spoil her. Teri is a fantastic mother, and Veronica is turning into a wonderful little girl. Jumping into a ready-made family has been a real challenge. Teens can be so humbling. They certainly challenged my beliefs on child raising. Theyve stumbled a little as they get out on their own, but Im proud of where they are headed. I have 2 granddaughters. They forced their young mothers to grow up very fast. After Wiley, I went to IU and picked up a degree in Biology, and my 1st wife, Nan. I got an MS at the UW-Madison. Although I applied for work in any state with a ski hill, my first offer was from my birth state as a health inspector in Boise. That wasn't my cup of tea, so after a year I quit to help Senator Frank Church campaign for President. I then joined the Carter/Mondale staff in Idaho. I then became a farm labor economist at the ID Dept. of Employment. A year later I moved to the Governor's energy office, as Director of Energy Resource Programs, and provided staff support to Governor Evans for energy resource issues. I next took a position running solar programs for Bonneville Power in Portland, OR. I became chi...Expand for more
ef of the New Residential Conservation Section. I started my computer hobby while at BPA. My first computer was an Osborne 1. I started with CPM, Wordstar and Supercalc and moved on to DOS, Macs, Windows and Office. I now have a home network with 12 PCs. I liked BPA, but not the big city. After 5 years, moved back to Boise. I tried consulting, but wasnt that successful. I also ran for County Clerk but couldnt overcome the "D" by my name. I then ended up at the Dept of Commerce working in economic development. That was very enjoyable, but I got tired of fighting over whether to put efforts in rural areas that needed it or urban areas where success was more likely. I moved to the DEQ to work in hazardous waste. After 2 years, the opportunity with the Idaho World, the oldest newspaper in the state, came up. It had fewer than 200 subscribers and was in danger of going under. A co-worker that had experience in newspapers, but not computers, asked me to join him in saving it. We increased subscribers to over 1000 and doubled advertising within 2 years. But it became clear it was not going to make enuf $$, so I started looking for real work. I now understand age discrimination, as it took me 3 years to find an acceptable position. While looking, I ran for County Commissioner. I got more votes than a D ever had, but still lost by 60 votes. The many career changes took its toll and Nan and I separated in 1992. Teri was a clerk in the local store and I enjoyed talking with her while shopping, even finding reasons to stop in if her car was there. After a short romance, we were married in July, 1994. She lost her oldest child before we married, but going from living alone to a family of 6, and then 7, was a real learning experience. The 4 older kids have all moved out on their own, so now it's just the 3 of us.
