Wayne's Story
Life
After graduation I went into the Coast Guard from 1968 to 1972. I was married in 1969 and am still married to the same person. We met standing in line for the Dick Cavett Show in New York in 1968 and our first "date" was for Macey's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
I attended Cal State Stanislaus after the Coast Guard and went to work for Bank of America in 1974. In early 1978 I entered the Air Force and served for 19 years retiring in 1996. Most of my time was spent as an aircraft maintenance officer in IL, SC, NJ, WA, and the Republic of Kopea. The AF was good to me sending me for doctoral work at Southern Illinois University after which I taught at the AGF Institute of Technology.
After retiring from the military I worked as a college administrator in the Illinois community college systemm near Chicago. I retired from the college in August 2006 but couldn't stay retired and am now teaching at Argosy University in Schaumburg, IL. I also work with the North Central Association on accrediting colleges. I participate,as a volunteer,with: DayOneNetwork, which helps people with learning and developmental disabilities; Transitional Living Services which provides services to homeless vets; Rotary; and Bookfriends, which collects and sends textbooks to Tanzania.
My wife Corrine and I have a son, Nathan (31), who lives in North Carolina and a daughter, Meredith (29), who is currently working on her master's and is living in the Chicago area.
My wife and I are looking for a retirement location and are currently conisdering Portland, ME.
School
My Dad was in the military so I went to many schools including those in Ft. Knox, KY (1st grade); Burlington, WA (2nd); Whittier, Alaska (3rd & 4th); Marina, CA (5th), Ft. Ord, CA (6th & 7th); Munich, Germany (8th & 9th); Seaside, CA (part of 10th); and San Jose, CA (10th to 12th).
My most fondly remembered teachers was Oakley McEachren in 8th and 9th grades in Munich. We also had an ex- German U-Boat captain for a German teacher.
College
Colleges have been many and varied. I did my undergraduate work at California State University - Stanslaus and took some classes at Modesto CC, as well. My masters was from Central Michigan University although I never saw thw college, itself. I attended at Charleston, AFB in SC. My doctoral work was at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
I also graduated from several military schools including Air Force Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College, and the Air War College.
Workplace
As a 9th grader in Munich Germany, I worked at the school as the janitor. My Mom worked in the lunchroom and they paid her for my work because it wasn't legal to pay me directly. I also bagged groceries at the commissary where we performed "slave ...Expand for more
labor" stocking shelves befor the store opened for the privilege bagging for tips during regular hours.
Like many kids around San Jose, I spent time picking fruit (apricots) in the hills above the city before going on to my first real job at the Red Barn on Story Rd (don't know if it is still there or not). I think the owner's name was Bill Nakamura and he had been in the Japanese internment camps during WWII.
I went into the Coast Guard from 1968-1972 and then on to college. After graduation, I went to work for Bank of America in Turlock and later Stockton. In 1977 I went to work at DeRollo Buick, Opel and Mazda in Stockton for a year before entering the Air Force in 1978 (see the military section).
After retiring from the military in 1996, I went to work in the Illinois community college system first as a dean of social science and business and later as a vice president at Waubonsee CC in Sugar Grove, IL.
I am now retired and, therefore, a consultant. I work with a regional accrediting association (NCA) and volunteer as a fundraiser and planner for a number of charities.
Military
I grew up in the military as an Army brat and thought I was bound for glory at the Coast Guard Academy in 1967. Alas, I was not an engineer so the Academy and I oarted company before the end of my first semester. Times being what they were, I enlisted in the Coast Guard where I got to serve on ships built in 1936 (Cutter Campbell) and 1942 (Cutter Winnebago). It was great fun and I met my wife while stationed at Governor's Island, NY. We met standing in line for the Dick Cavett Show. After being stationed in NY, we moved on to Honolulu in 1970 (got married in Chicago enroute).
After the Coast Guard, College, Bank of America, and DeRollo Buick, I entere the Air Force as an aircraft maintenance officer in 1978. The AF was very good for me and I was able to get my master's degree while stationed in Charleston, SC. In the AF, I was stationed in San Antonio, TX, Rantoul, IL, Charleston, SC, Wrightstown, NJ, Gunsan, Korea, Tacoma, WA, Belleville, IL, Carbondale, IL, and Dayton, OH.
In 1987 I was selected for doctoral sponsorship by the AF in preparation for teaching at the Air Force Institute of Technology. I taught organizational behavior and leadership, strategic planning and other management topics and ended up as the Director of Plans and Operations when I retired in 1996.
Aside from the mundane duties of an AF officer, the AF gave me the opportunity to meet my wife and have two wonderful children, participate in an aircraft accident investigation in the mountains of Korea, testify before a presidential commission on assignment of women in the armed forces and prepare for a second career as a college administrator. It's been great fun.
