Wendie's Story
Life
After my husband finished Vet school at UF, we moved to Ocala, FL and have lived here for 24 yrs. I eventually went back to UF, commuting from Ocala, received my M.D. degree, completed residency and fellowship, and now practice here full-time in Diagnostic Radiology.
We have two children: a son who is 15 and our daughter is 9. He likes tennis, swimming, camping and wakeboarding. Our son recently started school at a college prep boarding school in Atlanta and we are frequently heading up I-75. We usually stop in Lake City to eat. People say our daughter looks like my husband and acts like me! She is busy with activities after school and luckily still likes to do things with Mom. She dances, plays tennis and piano, takes art lessons and loves sleepovers. Our pets include a black lab, a black cat and 5 fish.
After 21 years of being an equine vet, my husband retired for health reasons in 2002. He received a living, non-related kidney transplant in July of 2004 at Mayo in Jax from an "angel" acquaintance in Ocala. Our donor worked with me as an x-ray tech student and is the wife of a physician colleaque. Both Bruce and our donor are doing well and we feel incredibly blessed by our friend's "gift of life". She was discharged on the second post-op day and went back to work in 2 weeks. Bruce now has normal kidney function and a greatly improved quality of life.
Both of my parents have passed away. My father died from colon cancer just two weeks after my son was born. My mom died from breast cancer in 1992 and lived with us for the last 6 months of her life. The closing for our house in Lake City was the same day as our 20th reunion and it was too emotional a day to go to the reunion. We w...Expand for more
ere still in Jax after my husbands transplant at the time of the 30th reunion. Would love to have seen everyone and hear what everyone is doing.
I don't really have time for any true hobbies. My family, friends, work and home fill my days and evenings. We have several close couple friends and enjoy dinners together and occasionally traveling together. My girl friends and I look forward to girls night out and try to get together (just girls) once every month or two. I am trying to exercise more and get back in shape -doing a little weight training and a little tennis. My husband enjoys his weekly Texas hold-um game in the neighborhood.
During the last twenty years we have traveled as much as possible (often thru vet or medical meetings) and have rafted the Grand Canyon twice, traveled out west with the kids thru Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks to Canada, skiied a few times, visited NYC, Chicago, North Carolina, Colorado, San Francisco and Hawaii. We took a cruise to Alaska for our 15th Anniversary and went to Italy for two weeks for our 20th. We tried to recreate our first date at the Cedar Key Arts Festival on the 20th anniversary - It was a little different with children who were ages 8 and 2 at that time!
All in all, life has been very good for us. Health problems with my parents and then my husband have given us a real appreciation of good health and the need to enjoy life as much as possible now. Life gets a little hectic during the school year, particularly when I have alot of night and weekend call.
Would love to come to the next reunion - need as much notice as possible - and would enjoy hearing from my friends at Columbia High. Hope all is well with you. Fondly, Wendie
