Wesley's Story

Life Hey, everybody. Grew up in Freeport, Texas (56 miles south of Houston, right on the Golfo de Mexico) did two short stints with my mom in California, one in 8th grade, the other in 10th grade, did really crappy in school there and got sent home both times. Graduated from Brazosport High School in Freeport in 1982. Joined the Air Force in 1983, went to basic training and Russian Language school at Lackland AFB in San Antonio from Jan 83 to Feb 84. Spent some time for more training at Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo, survival school at Fairchild AFB in Washington state, was at Tempelhof Air Base in West Berlin, Germany from January 85 to January 89. Stationed at Fort Meade with NSA from Feb 89 to October 1994. Spent last two years of Air Force time going to evening school at Villa Julie College, learning court reporting and machine shorthand. Started reporting in September 1994, was freelance reporter and CART writer/captioner for deaf and hard of hearing. Began in October 2002 as official court reporter at U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg. Live in York County, PA now. Now on second marriage, I have one daughter from my first marriage, a son from my second marrige, and also have two stepdaughters. I sure do miss Texas! Everybody write me! School They say that you should never have regrets. But we're all human, right? So we're allowed a minor regression here and there. If I could change one thing about high school, it's that I would have played football. Loved to throw and catch, was pretty good at it, but lacked the self-confidence to at least try for the team. Of course now I kno...Expand for more
w I could've done it, so if anybody ever figures out time travel one day, I'll go back to myself and say "Get out there and give it your best effort. You might surprise yourself." Workplace After drifting through a few short-term jobs around the Brazosport area (Minute Market on Highway 288 in Freeport, Sherwin Williams Paints in Clute) I finally landed at B. Dalton Bookseller at the Brazos Mall in Lake Jackson, Texas and I worked there from 1981 to later 1982. Then I joined the Air Force, slogged my way through basic training, and attended Russian language school, advanced tech school, survival school, then served with the 6912th Electronic Security Group in West Berlin, Maryland. Came back to the States in January 1989, worked at NSA until October 1994 when I left the service. From 1992 to 1994 I attended evening classes at Villa Julie College studying court reporting and machine shorthand. Began working as a freelance court reporter in September 1994 with Betz & Strouse, then in 1997 through a series of management changes worked for Duane Smith at Court Reporting Concepts. Began working as a "realtime" reporter in 1995, and from 2000 to 2002 did a lot of work as a realtime captioner and CART (Computer Access Realtime Translation) services provider for deaf and hard of hearing persons. Got my lucky break in the fall of 2002 and landed a hard to get position as official court reporter for Judge Christopher Conner at the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg. Plan to finish out my working days as a federal court reporter. I sure do hope my fingers hold out for about another 30 years or so!
