Will's Story
Life
Yes, I became a writer. Not full-time, mind you, but a writer nonetheless. I used to write for RockFlash...then it became Flash Magazine, and I wrote for them...and then they became bankrupt, and I got stiffed for about 300 bucks. After years upon years of trying to find that ever-elusive full-time writing gig, however, my ship finally came in: I'm now the Associate Editor of the web magazine Bullz-Eye.com, which - as of this writing - has 5 million unique hits per month...which is pretty darned good, I'm led to understand. I also continue to serve as a contributing writer to PortFolio Weekly. As of Oct. 13, 2001, I'm married to my lovely wife, Jennifer. We're currently living in South Norfolk with our daughter, Ally, and our cat, SED (an acronym for Something Entirely Different, which she most certainly is). In other words, life's pretty sweet.
School
What's there to say about my days in Great Bridge? It was...something. The SCA presidency was like an albatross around my neck for years after I left high school. To think that I was naive enough to believe that being an officer would make me popular. In retrospect, I shouldn't have cared whether I was popular or not. It wasn't until my senior year that I really came into my own and began to realize that I could be my own person and make friends without trying to be in any particular clique. I have to reluctantly admit, however, that by being in the SCA and putting up with the standing ovations that, for the most part (though, I realize, not entirely), were done as a joke, I managed to make friends across the social spectrum. Not every high school student can say that, and I acknowledge that as an impressive ...Expand for more
accomplishment. So that's something. I think my greatest regret, however, is that I didn't discover alternative music until 1987, when I went to see "Sid and Nancy" at the Naro with Tom Nuckols. Oh, the concerts I must have missed...!
College
So, like lots of Great Bridge folks, I went to TCC. And I hated it. Because it was like never having left Great Bridge at all. And when I went to the Virginia Beach campus, that was somehow even worse, because not only did I not know anyone, but everyone still seemed to be in the cliques from the various Virginia Beach schools they'd attended. I finally escaped and made it to Averett College, in Danville, VA, where I thrived and prospered and scored a journalism degree...not that it's done me a lick of good, you understand. But I met a lot of great friends when I was there, and, ultimately, I care a lot more about them than I do about what good my degree has done for me.
Workplace
Why not make this as indepth as possible, right? First, there was McDonald's. Then came A&B Propane. That's right, I sold propane and propane accessories. Then came Pizza Hut, which didn't last long, because I finally got in at Record Bar, where I stayed off and on for the next six years. From there, it was on to Harris Publishing (no relation), where I stayed for almost a decade. Then I moved to Portfolio Recovery Associates for the better part of two years. Now, however, I'm finally a full-time writer / editor, with the website Bullz-Eye.com. I'd continued to write all along, having contributed to RockFlash, H.R. Magazine, NineVolt Magazine, PopSided, PopMatters.com, and Amplifier, and I'm still a contributor to PortFolio Weekly even now.
