Will's Story

Life I retired as a Police Juvenile Specialist for the Woodridge Police Department, Patrol Division. I had been with my agency for 30+ years. I had the opportunity to meet some fascinating people and made good friends throughout the way. I was married in December 2004 to a wonderful woman who has two children of her own. I also have three wonderful adult sons. They all have successful careers and have made me very proud of them. School I enjoyed going to school but was glad when I was "done!" I admit I probably should have tried harder in High School, but had a lot of fun just the same. I went to C.O.D. and got my Associate of Arts in Police Science, but never went further except for the job training. I have over a thousand hours of police training, specializing in juvenile law, procedure, and crisis intervention. College C.O.D. was fun and challenging. At first, it seemed kind of like glorified high school, but getting the degree meant a lot to me. People who have attended C.O.D. always mention that they enjoyed classes, and it's still the most attended higher learning facility in the area. Workplace When I graduated from DG North in 1971, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. I decided that law enforcement fascinated me, so I started taking classes at COD in Police Science. I applied and was hired at the Woodridge Police Department (WPD) in October of 1971 as a police explorer and dispatcher. I took the police officers' exam in 1973 and was hired as a sworn officer...Expand for more
in 1974. I worked patrol, traffic, investigations, and specialize in working with troubled children & their families. As a juvenile officer, I work with children from all walks of life who are victims and offenders. It is very challenging and rewarding work. I am a member of several police organizations. I have been awarded past Police Officer of the Year, DuPage County Juvenile Officer of the Year, and have been recognized as a Juvenile Specialist in DuPage & Will Counties. To say that I love my job is an understatement. If I have helped at least one person, then all my hard work has been worth it. After being out of police work for over 3.5 years, I started working for the Lyons Police Department as a police officer. I was hired as a "lateral," meaning that I didn't have to take tests and be on an eligibility list to get the job. I work part-time right now and enjoy getting back into the profession once again. Left there in June 2011, had total left knee replacement surgery in November 2011, and was on disability and unemployment until I was hired by a hospital Security department and worked there from 2013-2019 when I had to retire due to another cervical spine surgery in November 2019. During rehab, I had to get my right knee replaced by a minimally invasive robot-assisted total right knee replacement. Was still in rehab during the winter 2020-2021 holiday season. Hoping to enjoy retirement one of these days without rehab, injuries, or illness during my retirement.
