Willard's Story

Life Willard Davis & Paula Powers 2829 Sylhowe Road, Oakland, CA 94602 510-482-2206, Dear Friends, Please remove us from your missing person's list. We've moved from La Selva Beach, back to Oakland- We miss our friends at the Center for Conscious Living and weekly Miracles-Attitudinal Healing Group at Ray's barn. We co-facilitated the Spousal Bereavement and Life-Threatened Groups each Tues nite at the Center for Attitudinal Healing in Sausalito- as we have continued to do- after finding our lives changed during the Berkeley Firestorm and Paula's ensuing (successful) bout with Ovarian Cancer. Willard taught special ed kids in Monterey County; after teaching at Cal State Mont Bay with Linda Rogers for a semester.Willard now does travelogue and sings and plays guitar with elders (dementia, etc.)& frail adults. Katy, Willard's daughter, graduated and finished her Reed Year Abroad, studying math at the University in Budapest; now returned from Namibia Africa teaching Math & Choir with the Peace Corps. She's now at Yale working on an MBA-focusing on microlons for women. Willard's son, Scott has self-published a book of poetry and is spreading his work in Marin County. Willard's Mom, Kay Loftus, died Fall 2003, following a series of strokes. In October 2000, we were kindly invited by Paula's son Chris, Molly and kids, Sarah(9) & RJ(6) to Tokyo, where they were living and now they've built their dream-home in Palo Alto. We took a two week tour to see much of China. We still give our Creativity Painting Workshop in our new Studio below the Mormon Temples and overlooking the South Bay. Our most recent show of paintings was in Mendocino, Santa Cruz and Huntington Beach. Paula currently has a show in Oakland.Come see our art. Having guests gives us the excuse to take time out to enjoy life-so please come and visit. We'll send directions. Summer 2003 we visited Kauai and had a good time with Max & Marge Stanton. And then to Santa Fe. Andy & Michele Harris hosted a gathering at their new ranch in Placerville. We took off May 2005 to see Katy in Namibia, Africa, with her buddy Tracy Heuser. We continue our tri-monthly Mystery School with Jean Houston in Santa Barbara. In Summer 2004 we joined her Social Artistry program, to learn leadership skills in order to promote the UN Development Goals for Children and Women and satifying basic human needs. After working for 4 years with Special Ed kids, I've taken up my guitar, made songbooks with kids and come to see how free we really are to find new ways to share and make happiness for each other. With a fresh vision of empowering kids and adults to connect through art, community action and self-sustaining funding--I'm starting a new learning and art career curve which seems to have little to do with retirement. We're involved in a grass-roots campaign to create a Dept of Peace aand a peace Academy, seeing peacemakers as an essential part of the US presidential Cabinet decision-making process. We wish you a Joy-filled year and a Peaceful and Creative New Century with new people to love and more patient and empo...Expand for more
wering ways to love who you already love!! Wee Willy Davis & Paula Powers College My fondest memories are my walks with my friends down the beautiful beaches at UCSB. Singing in the Men's Glee, writing poetic plays in my Shakespeare class after reading his works, seeing all the world's art in my Art class, sleeping out by the lagoon with my first girl-friend, Anne, and our friends, doing world folk dances on and off campus(disneyland especially), joining World Without War with my first wife, Ebba, and meeting Halleck Hoffman, and Cal & Sylvia Rainbolt, learning French, german and Spanish with Ebba, counting fruit flies in Bio Lab, getting an A in chemistry, trying to get out of ROTC as a Conscientious Objector, surviving ROTC through Pete Wang's sense of humor, getting rid of the sea lion dragged into our dorm in Anacapa, running for hours every day off and on-campus- in cross - country, and working on the campus poetry Mag were my thrills. Workplace I'm moving into a creative phase similar to my first work- that of creating a Community School in North Oakland- back in 1969. Now I want to co-create a learning community around media productions with teens helping younger kids enjoy art in all contexts. My last 3 years as a child development instructor(Thanks to Linda Rogers) at Cal State Monterey Bay, a Special Ed. teacher,an ROP TV production teacher in Monterey County, and as a reading/singing teacher in Watsonville, I've rediscovered how powerfully collage-work, drawing, computer-work, media production, acting, painting, movement, field-trips, music and singing moves people into their own sense of power and inner knowing about what their values and lives are about. Through 20 years of college teaching with MANY incredible colleagues in psychology, computer software, and communications at Heald Colleges(Oakland, Rohnert Park, Martinez and Concord), Computer Learning Center, Dominican College, Indian Valley and Marin Colleges, and also 5 years of Middle and High School teaching in Concord, Oakland, and North Oakland, I have gained a sense of how little important my thoughts are of what's happening, but how rich it is to listen, laugh and love whomever you're with. Paula and I have served for 12 years as facilitators --with the Center for Attitudinal Healing groups: of caregivers, for those with life-threatening illnesses, and of bereavement groups -this experiience helps me see how powerful it is to open the heart, tell one's truth, and to care. This work began as a result of losing our home in the Berkeley Fire of 1991, and then Paula coming down with and moving through her ovarian cancer. I want to create a retrospective on my mother's writing and a tribute to her nurturing -gardening soul. Kay died several years ago. I'm looking for people to interview for a radio program focusing on how we can help our generation, and our kids to contribute to a new culture of creativity and connecting with others in our local and world communities.
