William's Story

Hi Friends, After high school Nick Whitaker and I were sponsored by Brennans Cadillac to go to General Motors training center in Tarrytown N.Y. for 8 weeks, than we were Hired by Brennans in September. We were both 1A draft status and tested for the Air Force. Nick got his draft notice while doing that, so in Dec 1967 we enlisted in the Army for Aviation school, and became Helicopter mechanics. Our orders after Basic training got mixed up. I went to Fort Rucker 2 weeks before Nick, and that split up our tours of duty. I was stationed a few more months at Fort Rucker Alabama.Nick was sent directly to Viet Nam. Than in November 68 I was deployed to Viet Vietnam with the 9th Infantry Division,at Dong Tam. Than 3/5 Air cav. than to Vinh Long to 7/1 Air Cav.Nov 68 to Nov 69.. Sent to Fort Eustis VA. for 2 months, than sent to Kornwestheim, Germany for my last 9 months of active duty. I hired on with Western Electric in Yonkers NY.Feb 1970 and was laid off in july 1974. Good friend From Western Electric Ricky Weaver went to work for Penn Central, and, helped me get hired on to the Railroad. Penn Central, Con Rail, back than, [Now, Metro North] I was trained to be a Tower Operator. I worked 2 different locations for 1 1/2 years,Pike, Rye NY Tower, than Vern Tower in Mt Vernon. than dispatched for the tower operators for the next 4 years in NY City. My girlfriend Lillian, at the time of 5 years, moved to California following her sister and Brother in law. Settled and got work. I was very stressed out with the railroad job. I came out to visit California. Than in Jan 1980 Moved to California. I drove my 1972 Corvette to California. I Left on a Sat at 12 noon and arrived in Santa Ana, California 4 days later Tuesday 7pm. I Hired on With Pacific Telephone in Feb 1980, and had time bridged from western Electric to total 32 1/2 years at this writing.[now at&t] Retired now. I was a service tech.[residence and small business] installer/field tech.for 18 years than Special services for 10 years. Installing high speed Data lines. In all, I have been an auto mechanic, helicopter mechanic, railroad tower operator, and a telephone data installer. I was Married in 1988, and Divorced in 1992. nder all pictures of what these pictures represent. While living on the west coast, I have had the opportunity to visit, Lake Mead, Lake Mohave, Lake Havasu,Boating, jet skiing, water skiing. All along the Colorado river. River rafted down the Merced river. Camped at Yosemite National park, Snow skied at Lake Tahoe, Big Bear Lake, Squaw Valley, Visited San Francisco.Camping in The Redwood national forrest.[ Trees big enough to drive a car through.] and of course swim and surf in the Pacific ocean, and watch some beautiful sun sets.I made some great friends that showed me all these beautiful things. So glad to have gotten out of Mount Vernon. I have joked with myself sometimes when driving home from work for the 5 years that i lived in Corona Del Mar/Newport Beach 3 blocks from the Pacific ocean, and driving into the setting sun on Pacific Coast Highway. Comparing that to looking at the Bronx River...LOL I would like to mention one thing that I highly resent about Mt Vernon High School. I took Auto shop as a vocation for 3 years, 4 periods a day. The summer of 1965 the shop teacher for my jr year, Mr. Dinni had a heart attach, and never showed up that semester to teach. Our Shop class of about 20 students did not have one day of auto shop education. We just sat in the classroom and talked for 4 hours every day, or cut class. Mr Derito, who was teaching the senior students on the other side of the class room could have merged the 2 classes together, but he didn't. The school did not provide 1 day with a substitute from September to June. We lost a whole year of vocational education. so for a 3 year vocational course of auto mechanics, we never worked on an auto, or standard transmission,or a differential, The Mt Vernon board of education should have been sued by the parents of those 20 students for not providing a teacher for the 1966 school year of Vocational auto shop.A friend asked me recently how were we graded on our report card each time when we had no teacher? I don't remember, but we should have all failed auto shop, and gotten an F for the year, and left back to repeat that school year. How did the school board cover this up? I have many pictures posted here. Everyone has a caption written under each picture, just scroll down below each picture as you view them. I welcome any friends to contact me. It would be great to catch up on old times. Bill Ps. Thanks to classmates, In just this past month ,I have reconnected With two people who were very important in my life. Laurie and Nick
