William's Story
Life
After leaving Fremont High School, I went to Berkeley, majoring in Electrical Engineering. Worked on the Daily Cal, moving up to Business Manager. Finally completed a four-year degree in five. No one seemed to want to employ me, so I went to Syracuse University as a graduate student, at first in Engineering. Got married after my first year, and stayed married for the next fifteen years. I then switched over to an interdisciplinary program to get a doctorate in Physiology, working on hearing in mammals and insects.
A job opportunity then came up at Purdue University, where they were building up their neurobiology program. just as Richard Nixon was being impeached. With a teaching award and a large research grant in hand, I thought that promotion to tenure was a sure thing, but it wasnÂt to be.
After some searching about, I landed a job with a privately-funded research institute in Basel, Switzerland. After a couple of years, found myself single again, and spent the next five years as a bachelor. In 1983, big changes: a new partner and a new job. The partner was (and is) an English lady, and was a manager at Ciba-Geigy. The job was in the Pharmacology Department at the University of Basel. Those arrangements lasted for fifteen years.
In 1998, we: a) left our jobs; b) got married; c) bought an old, run-down hotel in the Swiss Alps in a town called Kandersteg. Converted the building to four holiday apartments and an apartment for ourselves. You can see the result as AdamsAlpineEden dot com.
