William's Story
After graduating from Coffee HS in 1954 and UNA in 1958 I went into the Army for a short while and then returned to Florence to work at Reynolds and Sears and then as a National Guard Technician for several years. I married Nancy Link in 1965 and in 1969 took a job in Nashville as Chief General Accountant of Shrader Division of Scovill Corporation. Later I became sales manager for Anchorlok and moved to Texas. Having stayed in the National Guard for the entire period I returned to Active Duty in 1972 and stayed until I retired in 1990 as a Colonel. I served in various Army Headquarters and the Army Signal School until moving to northern Virginia and serving 5 years in the Pentagon and 2 1/2 years at the HQ Army Material Command. in the fields of intelligence and logistics for 12 years until retiring and moved to Knoxville, TN. Along the way I completed the Army War College and an MA from Central Michigan University.
My wife Nancy and I live on part of the farm on which she grew up where we raise fruit trees, blackberries, strawberries, grapes along with involvement in the church, in playing and singing old-time religious and secular music, and my writing for the weekly community newspaper the Halls Shopper News which I have done for the last year. We have a son, Jeff, who with his wife Robbin have 3 sons and our daughter Wendy who lives in Knoxville and teaches at ITT Tech. I have continued my life-long involvement in amateur radio, K4TQK, in music in church and singing/playing at nursing homes and senior groups.
