sparency, avoid factions through federalism. Freedom, markets are the genius of modernity. Pre-moderns in Islamic world are not free. Unprovoked Islamist terrorist strikes shocked the Western world into taking steps to drain the swamp starting with two oppressive regimes. Free our minds from notion of benevolent omnicompetent state. We continue to be plagued by believers in some form of Utopianism. Elites, bored, wealthy, work to transform reluctant America, the "social conscience." Better: perform your role in society morally. If you are a journalist, report fairly. If you are a legislator: beware of progressive policies born of honest caring - they can have devastating unintended consequences. If you are a high court justice, practice self-restraint: interpret the law even-handedly and let the chips fall where they may. Instead of bankrupting itself on entitlements, fed gov should focus on strong defense and prudent regulation of industry. We should pay no more than 8% earnings for that, plus 12% to state and local gov for schools and infrastructure. Constitutionality of New Deal, Great Society programs could only be justified thru a gross misinterpretation of "promote the general welfare". If framers had intended a nanny nation, Constitution could say "provide the individual welfare". It doesn't. But, since we have these social programs, and there is no electoral appetite to repeal them, we need to approach the problem wisely, with conservatism. Faith-based programs to help needy people work well! Public service unions (such as NEA) perpetuate vast uncaring bureaucracies and lousy inner city schools. We need only a few publicly run organizations managed as lean corporations. Failure is productive part of any process: eliminate underperforming departments. No guaranteed jobs. Stop attacks of ACLU on religion, Boy Scouts. Hoping for sea change in the judiciary away from activism. Elect Republicans, appoint conservative judges.
