William's Story
I was born in New Haven CT. On Dec 18th, 1943. My father was WWII submarine skipper who made the Navy a career. We lived in Groton, Ansonia, Norfolk, Panama, Key West (for my first two years of HS.1958-59) at the Convent of Mary Immaculate (now Mary Immaculate High school)
We moved to Groton, CT for my last two years of HS at Robert E. Fitch Senior High. I’m the oldest of 7 children, all whom are still living. Looking back on the 60s, I realize that they were truly the best years of my life, as single, curious, and willing to learn 😏 all about love, or at least what love was back then. Fitch was awesome, although transferring in as a junior had it’s challenges. Being blessed with a sense of humor helped break down some of the clique barriers. Diane_ and Muriel_ made my senior year VERY special. I was an academic “screw-off” and barely graduated. Had to retake the SATs the summer AFTER I graduated and squeezed into Fairfield University in the fall of 1961. Barely made it thru my first two years there requiring summer classes at Rutgers and Seaton Hall in order to be allowed to return as a junior. Late bloomer to say the least, got my “$&#*” together and graduated in 1965. Got a free ride thru the grad school due to the university moving from priests in the dorm as proctors, to recently graduating seniors. This first group of seniors from the class...Expand for more
of 1965, were selected, primarily, because collectively, there would be nothing underclassmen could try that we hadn’t done ourselves. 😏 Finished my Masters in August of 1966 and my deferment was iimmediately moved from 2S to 1A. I had 6 mos. to get into uniform. Graduated from AF OTS 30 Jun 1967 as a 2LT. Got married a week later to the woman (and only woman) I’ve slept with for the last 55+ years, who truly is my better half. We had three children: Melissa, who tragically passed away from heart surgery complications at age 48, in 2016. Son Michael/51, an architect, married with two children, Amelia/17 and Cooper/16. He and wife Karen live here in Pensacola. Daughter Jennifer/45, military spouse. Three children: Grace/17Alec II/15 and Gibson/9. Married to LtCol Alec Finlay, Army MEDIVAC Pilot, living in Huntsville, AL. I’m retired from Federal Civil Service where I worked for the Naval Education and Training Command as an Education Specialist. I also had a parallel career in the Air Force Reserve. This is the 2nd time, and last time, that I’ll enter this info. We’ve lived in the oldest European Settlement in the United States (Pensacola, FL/1559) since 1974. St Augustine was settled several years later. as the first continuously occupied settlement.
I hope all my classmates are well and as blessed as I have been.
