William's Story

Life I AM ON FACEBOOK! About me: I was born and raised in St. Louis. It took me 35 years to make it to Colorado. That sucks. I knew I wanted to come out here about 12 years ago, when I drove through the mountains on my way to Winter Park to go skiing. Something snapped inside of me and I knew right then and there that I had to move out to Colorado ASAP. ASAP for me turned out to be about 12 years later. I’m enjoying my time out here. St. Louis is hot and humid in the summer, miserably cold and cloudy in the winter with no snow or fun stuff to do. Colorado is sunny and nice in the summer, sunny and nice in the winter and tons of stuff to do either time of the year. Yes it snows a lot here - but it’s not like that nasty, cold-through-your-bones weather in the Midwest or on the east coast. IT IS INCREDIBLE OUT HERE. You’re at 5000-7000 feet depending on where you live (on the Front Range) and the sun is CRAZY STRONG! And therein lies the secret that all native Coloradoans like to hide from everyone else. You all watch the news and see how much snow we get and that it’s supposedly cold - but it’s not cold and the sunshine is beautiful. IN 2006 HOWEVER WE HAVE BEEN PUMMELED WITH SNOW - 4 feet in 4 weeks time. 2007 has been (so far) dismal for snow. Most of the resorts have been trying to open, but lack decent bases of snow. I've got a Copper Mountain ski pass this year, but it looks like I won't be able to use it till after the 1st of the year 2008. Pre-Colorado In St. Louis I went to Saturday School (Pre-School) at Common’s Lane Elementary on Derhake Road, Kindergarten at Mark Twain Elementary (now a church I think), grade school at St. Thomas the Apostle school (now converted into a senior care home), high school at Rosary High School (now named Trinity - because the Archdiocese closed 2 other locations and combined the 3), Florissant Valley Community College, Saint Louis University & Parks Aviation College (for my flight training and degree) and finally Webster University for my MBA with an emphasis in Information Technology. Fun facts about me? I've traveled to Venezuela quite a few times and learned a lot of Spanish. Cool country and super nice, warm hearted & friendly people. My ex was from there. I still keep in touch with her family occasionally. I keep in touch with few close friends in St. Louis. Tom Muffler and Mike Gorzel are 2 very close friends of mine and I've known them for many years. Tom lives in Alton, IL and Mike in St. Peters, MO. They both have beautiful kids. One of my sisters lives in St. Louis and the other in Alabama. My sister Jennifer works at Monsanto and Amy has her PhD in English and teaches at a university in Alabama. I have a slight case of Obsesssive Compulsive Disorder and am manically organized and clean in my work and usually at home too. It's quite the joke at work and with my friends, and I take it all in good fun. It actually works out great in my job, where I have to be 100% organized for every project that I'm working on as the I.T. Project Manager. I'm a Lacto, Ovo, Pesce Vegetarian which means I'll eat food with milk or eggs in them and I eat some fish. However, I have not eaten meat or drank milk for about 15 years now. I eat eggs by themselves rarely if ever. The only fish I eat is Crab, Salmon and Shrimp, sometimes Tuna. I do love cheese and wine! I love PF Changs & Pirrone's Pizza in St. Louis. Pizza in Denver sucks! Photography, art and travel are my hobbies and I love skiing, snowmobiling and anything outdoors! I also recently traveled to Hawaii just for the heck of it. The trip was incredible and I'm considering living there sometime in the future. Yes it's expensive, but for a year it would be fun! Italy, Austria, Germany and Switzerland are also on my to-dos for travel. School Rosary was such a blur and (because of my own personality), a huge waste of time for me. I honestly don't think I ever studied at home for anything in high school. I did the absolute minimum to get by. All I did was wake up at the last minute, go to school, come home and play video games. That's nothing to be proud of and my grades obviously represented that lack of effort, but that was just about how unmotivated I was in high school. I remember having to go to summer school in my freshman year. OH MY GOD that was a horrible experience. What a miserable time that summer was. :) It motivated me at least to do a "little" bit more to avoid having to go back, but I didn't do much. As I was saying, most of High School was one, large blur, but there were some memorable funny things I recall: I really despise hot weather. Hot, humid weather is something I hate more than anything else. And so I remember that I never went outside for lunch break if I could avoid it. I was always, ALWAYS inside reading the latest news, car and tech magazines in the library where it was air conditioned! :) And I thought everyone else was nuts for being outside in that hot, humid weather. (No wonder I live in cool, crisp Colorado now!) ...Expand for more
I also remember the art class I was in where most of the guys would play baseball with a wooden stick and a smashed up soda can in Mrs. Harris (?) art room, whenever she would leave. That was hilarious. I remember Earl Thuet and I taking artwork down to the library for copies one day and mine wasn't completely dry - and I destroyed the glass on the copier when the ink got smudged all over it. That was funny. I remember our English teacher Mr. Bowen (?) bringing in a T.V. all the time to watch baseball instead of teaching us English - What a deadbeat. I never played football, but I remember the whole football team always yelling "Where's the damn clipboard." mimicking Mr. Bauer, the football coach and chemistry teacher. I remember hanging out the 2nd floor window in our chemistry or physics class and yelling to a Hostess Delivery driver to keep backing up towards the dock, except he was out of space and I told him to keep going and he smashed into the loading dock, got out and started threatening to kill me. I also remember the crappy Radio Shack TRS 80 computers we had to learn to program on and how Mr. Heggeman (?) wrote a program that was supposed to be "secret" and I cracked the code and displayed the results to him in 1 day. I also remember erasing a program he'd been working on for hours, because he'd neglected to save it. Tom Muffler and I laugh about that incident all the time. I also remember a lot of great teachers who tried their hardest and now that I'm older - all I can say is WOW you poor souls, I don't know how they do it. High School teenagers are brutal! -------------------------------------------------------- College was much more pleasant and meaningful. My flying experience was the BOMB and although I'm still paying off student loans for that, I wouldn't trade that experience for anything. I earned my private, commerical and instrument flight ratings and certificates. I flew all over the place in little private airplanes. It was great! Finally, my MBA experiences were some of the most beneficial. What I neglected to do in high school, I made up for in Graduate School. I aced my classes and would highly recommend Webster University a lot! I would highly recommend that anyone considering getting a Master's degree to do it! It opens up so many new doors for you. I also have my Cisco CCNA certification, MCP (Microsfot) and A+ computer certification. Those are older, but got my foot in the door for many technology jobs. I am currently working on my Project Management Professional certification which is very beefy and good to have when you are a Project Manager. That's my next big goal for education. College I earned 2 Associates degrees, a Bachelors and an MBA. - Associate Degree in Management (Emphasis in Aviation) from Parks College of Saint Louis University. - Associate Degree of Aviation Flight Technology from Parks College of SLU. - Bachelor's of Science in Business and Professional Pilot (received my Private, Instrument and Commercial licenses and ratings from the FAA) from Parks College of SLU. - Masters of Business Administration with an additonal emphasis in Information Technology from Webster University in St. Louis. I am currently studying for my Project Management Professional certification PMP and our IT was just awarded top IT team of year in Colorado by the Colorado Information Management Association. So that was cool news. Workplace I thoroughly enjoy school and worked at a Community College for 5 years while in St. Louis. It's a great atmosphere, even though the pay often isn't the best. I now work in Colorado as an Information Technology Project Manager for the Town of Castle Rock. The job's a blast and I work with outstanding coworkers. My job consists of planning, organizing, researching and implementing technology projects for all departments in the Town. Any department that needs to implement a technological piece of software or hardware to make their job more efficient or to better serve the public is what my position is all about. My job invovles tons of planning, research and organization. It actually fits my personality and interests 100% and I love my boss for placing me in this position. It's definitely my niche. Our team has had a very difficult time for the last year and 1/2 when our Service Manager was diagnosed with sarcoma cancer in his lungs and soft tissues. He's been fighting it for a long time now, but it seems to be getting the better of him. It's been a constant battle for our IT team in working with Darrin to get the job done while assisting him in any way we can. Military No military service for me, but I do respect and love all the military service men and women who are out there protecting our country each and every day. If I did join the military it'd probably be the Marines, since Lord knows they'd give you the best and hardest experience you'd ever get through. I did look into going into the Air Force as a pilot, way back when I was at Saint Louis University and thinking about joining the ROTC. I tested and got my medical exam at Scott Air Force Base, but my eyesight wasn't quite perfect enough and that all washed out. In the end, it was probably better for me that I didn't join.
