William's Story

I always wanted to be a Policeman when I grew up. My family and friends thought that it was a Stupid idea. As it turns out, they were Right. My hero has always been my brother. We are very close. He was my inspiration to become a policeman since he himself is one with L.A.P.D. Where have I lived and Why did I move good question. During High School I was really into Civil Air Patrol and flying as well as Law Enforcement. I got my private pilots license during high school. Took Law Enforcement classes taught by L.A.P.D on Saturdays for over a year. This enabled me to obtain enough units to only take three classes my senior year. This later paid off as I became a reserve police officer for the city of San Fernando. After high school I worked and went to college. All my search and rescue training with Civil Air Patrol enabled me to start working for an ambulance company in L.A. County. It took me a year but I was certified as a Los Angeles County Certified Paramedic and worked for Professional Ambulance & Warner Brothers Studios. I later lost my vision due to Diabetic Retinropathy and had to go back to school to learn Braille and programming for the blind. Luckily, after a year and several laser surgeries I regained my eye sight. That was when I got into telecommunications with System Development Corporation (SDC). This is where I met my wife. She worked for SDC at a contract site located in Des Moines, Iowa. This was the beginning of the first computer dating as we talked over our terminals. In the mid eighties I transferred from the corporate computer facility to Iowa to work on the Iowa State Medicaid contract where we were married. I later accepted a position with Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Iowa (aka IASD)) as their senior electronic claims analyst/network engineer. I next took a position of a computer operations analyst & wide area network manager. I was selected to work on a project to build a private network to allow inter communications for all Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. After the project I accepted a position with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association located in Chicago, I as a Senior Network Analyst. So we packed our bags and moved to Naperville, Illinois. In Chicago, I worked for the Association as a Senior Network Engineer. Worked there for several years on many diverse projects impacting the unified network. I next accepted a position with Unisys Network Enable as a Senior Network Engineer. I was about ready to transfer to Omaha Nebraska when I was offered a job with General Electric Technology Management Services as a Network Design Engineer so we stayed in Illinois I was later promoted to Director of Network Infrastructure and Data Center. I almost excepted a position for General Electric Capital as Director of their network but it would have meant moving to New Jersey....Expand for more
I discussed it with my wife and turned down the position so she could stay close to her family in Iowa. So far my best record has been a four hour drive from Chicago to Ames, IA without being ticketed. I later switched and got into consulting and worked for Xylogic's as a Network Engineer supporting the Lucent and Motorola accounts. I later went to work for a buddy of mine for a company called Finisar as a Regional Network Engineer. That's when I began to hate traveling, spending most of my time in airports. My territory was the north eastern United States and Canada. I switched careers and went back to law enforcement with the Will County, IL Sheriff's Department as a Deputy Sheriff, I retired after being hit by a DUI while directing traffic at an accident. Let me get off the work area and concentrate on the family life. My wife Ann and I have been married for over twenty five years now. We have two children; Lindsey (24) and Lucas (21). Oh yes, and my third child Watson. Watson is my dog. Watson is a Sheltie or miniature collie. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Matt Girard (Allison), because We were best friends and as time went on we lost touch. What happened to my first crush? That would have been Sandy Jacobson. I really don't know what happened but would love to talk to her again. Today its primarily dress casual button down shirt and tie with dress slacks. Twenty years ago it would have been suits with a a dress shirt matching the suit color. Weekends, is a different story, its back to jeans during the fall and winter and docker shorts during the spring and summer. Remember Illinois has four seasons and the winter can get downright nasty. The first year I moved to Chicago for a week it set all time records of -70 degrees with the wind chill. My office faced the lake and I couldn't see out due to the moisture freezing on the window. I do not have any trophies on the mantel. My wife put them all away. None were in sports but I had four trophies in skydiving competitions. I also had many trophies/plaques from work as as an E.M.T. Advanced & Paramedic. Lastly a couple of prized plaques I received while in Civil Air Patrol for search and rescue missions. The one childhood memory that I will never forget when while in third grade my mother had a stroke at age 40. I remember going every night with my father to the nursing home to be with her. Then all I could remember was how bored I was sitting for three to four hours with my mother not say a word. I remember the devotion my father had for my mother and how hard it was for him to let go when she finally died when I was in sixth grade. Lastly, I retired from the Will County, IL Sheriff's Department. I now volunteer with the Will County, IL Emergency Management Agency. I work four different divisions: Search & Rescue, Emergency Operations Center, Field Services and HazMat.
