William's Story

I got a letter one fine day.. The letter looked pretty official from the Rock County Draft Board.. Upon opening this letter I was invited to join the U.S.A. Military and become ,....whatever..!!!lol..Well I was given a date to report to a place I think the bus depot in Janesville, and to accept a ride to and from AFEES, in Milwaukee, Wi.. Man what a trip it was.. Upon arriving in Milwaukee we were herded into a rather impressive building, that was busy as a bee hive...Little did any of us that had just arrived, have any idea what we were in for..This place had something for having everything fillied out in triplicate, for whatever reason , just a duplicate wouldn't do, but it had to be three of everything..Well after a full day of being ,poked, stabbed (for blood, temps taken, etc, etc, the one thing that really stands out, besides the turn and cough routine, was the (and any guy that went through AFEES, will remember this is the ), bend over and spread them routine, sheesh!!!!!..After all was said and done, I received a letter informing me that i was accepted in the military, and with Viet Nam escalating, i thought , oh brother, what am I in for.. Well later on a bus load of us arrived at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, in the wee hours of the morning.. Those Seargents sure like to yell at you..Anyways, after we were officially inducted and hit the sack around midnight or so, we were told to get some shut eye, that wake up call was 05:00a.m. We were walked over to supply I think ,where we were given our fatigues, khakis, and dress uniforms..That was day one of "zero week".. The mess hall was pretty decent, but K.P. was a drag, depending on which job you were given.. I heard that later on the worst job on K.P. was cleaning out the "grease trap"..Then stench from there when the cover was taken off was enough to gag a maggot...We had one D.I. that told us if we made it through , zero week, we'd make it through basic training, and he was right...After that 8 week session we were transfered to Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Where we were taught the basics of survival, honed our combat skills and were trained further in our M.O.S..which for me was "Combat Engineer". Which came in handy over in South Korea where I became pretty good at blowing things up , besides running a dump truck.. Upon returning to the U.S. I got back involved in my favorite sport, bowling..Later on in years, I was fortunate enough to obtain tickets to the (then ) " Firestone Tournament of Champions", held in Fairlawn , (Akron) Ohio, Riveria Lanes.. There I got to meet a lot of the pro's that I've been watching on t.v.,and chit, chat with them, and shake hands with a lot of them..The two people i really enjoyed talking with were , the announcers, Chris Schenkel, and , Nelson Burton Jr. The year was 1992, and during one of the sessions (Ibefore the live broadcast of the television finals) we were asked to vacate the building due to a bomb threat...That was the year Marc MacDowel from Madison Wisconsin won the tournament..Life goes on and I'm happily married to my wonderful wife, and wouldn't trade her for all the women in the world. We've gone travelling, ( or what some people now a days would consider--day--trips) and have had a ball.. We've visited such small places like the "Grand Canyon", National Railway Museum in Green Bay, Elkhorn Wisconsin, 4th of July and ridden on the electric trolley there, the Zoo, here in Milwaukee( may sound boring to some people), but in actuality it's very educational..Looking forward to visiting the Museum of Science and Industry and Shed Aquarium in Chicago, going to a cranberry harvest in northern wisconsin, going over to the Dells and see what it's like after things have been fixed up, going to Canada to visit with some of my wife's friends, Family reunion here in Wisconsin this year and hopefully able to make it to next years reunion , in Alaska, what a drive that will be, lots of photos to take and things to see on the way up and the way back...All for now..I just got to thinking, how many of us "baby-boomers" have or go to "Family Reunions"? Family whether we have a great family or not so great family, they're still our family...Unfortunately I never had the chance to meet my Wife's Mom and Dad, nor did my Wife have the chance to meet my p...Expand for more
arents, although we both agree that our parents would have hit it off, right from the start...I've met or reunited with some of my cousins and nieces and nephews, some of whom i haven't seen in 50 years......Long time--huh??? I'm so lucky that I had parents , that had Family reunions even if they were on only one side of the family..I've gotten to know some of my cousins and nieces and nephews more , which in my book at least is time not wasted..I've grown closer as a result of these family reunions , with my own brothers and sister...I'm now married (2nd time, almost 4 years have flown by already) and have to grown sons that are out on their own.. I'm also a new step-dad, (well since my wife and i have been married.. Just got back a few weeks ago from Family Reunion, and had a ball.. Got to see all my cousins and nieces and nephews that could make it to the reunion...My wife and are aren't to sure yet if next family reunion is going to be held in Alaska next year or not, but i guess we'll find out sooner or later..Well as the Family Reunion finally started wrapping up we all got together and did the "Hokey-Pokey", and i was in the middle with my cam corder and got everyone doing the Hokey-Pokey ..It was sad when people started to head back home or for their respective hotels or motels..The place where we had just gotten together a matter of hours before was alive with laughter, children running, jumping, and playing, now somehow seemed very, very, somber,to the point that the silence was deafening...While we were there we all broke bread together , shared in stories from memories, and in general, made promises to "See You Next Year" kind of promises, and good Lord willing we'll be able to keep those promises, and again will look forward to seeing everyone that can make it to the Family Reunion....I've recently married(2nd marriage) to the most caring, loving, understanding, compassionate, giving, outgoing, spontaneous woman I've ever met..!!! This is the second marriage for both of us... I love her unconditionally, as well as she loves me unconditionally, and we just Celebrated our ....5th Wedding Anniversary... When we said for better or worse, ( we've found out that ) God has a pretty good sense of humor...Between my wife and I, we've had a total of 9 surgeries in the 5 year span, since we've been married...I, rather WE'VE GOTTEN TO THE POINT WHERE WE DON'T ASK , WHAT NEXT?????, lol,lol,lol.....It's amazing, what we, as human beings can endure, and bounce back, ( slow somtimes that it may be).............Break Time.............After my wife and I were married, we took a Honeymoon trip to the GRAND CANYON..If any of you have seen the "Canyon", on t.v. like on the Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel, or the History Channel, or PBS, granted the photographers are excellent in their field, but those films don't do the Canyon justice.. If you ever get the chance GO SEE THE CANYON IN PERSON, YOU'LL NEVER REGRET IT..!!!!!!!!!! Before graduation I had the chance to go on the "Pro-Bowlers Tour".. Mom said Diploma comes first, so my dream went out the window, and I'm glad it did. As it turns out I finally had a part of one of my dreams come true.. I got to go and spend a week in Akron Ohio, ( Firestone Tournament of Champions in 1992.) I was lucky enough to have my photo taken with a few of the Big Stars there, and to have coffee with them.. Then came my big Dream come true. I got to meet the man that gave me some sound advice ( in bowling) and helped me tremendously. That man was , MR. EARLY ANTHONY... I've had the pleasure of meeting Earl on several occasions, (while he was alive... Dreams do come True!!!! While I was at the Tournament of Champions ,everyone was told to vacate the building as there was a "bomb threat called in to the Lanes.. After an hour or so and after the all clear was given we were all allowed to go back in and take our seats again.. While we were all going back in everything we had was checked over by security, as a precaution.. Then while we were allowed back in to take our seats , I got to meet , have my picture taken, and later chat with Mr. Chris Schenkel, and Nelson Burton Jr. One of the pro's also was staying in the same motel I was. That was another pro I got to meet.
