William's Story
I was asked to share my story.
Post HS, I spent about a year screwing off more than trying to participate in the rat race. Dropping out of JC, etc.
I got talked into joining the Job Corps. Big mistake, after riding a bus into downtown LA and spending one night in a converted hotel, I knew I had to get out of there. So I joined the USAF, got trained in electronics as a technician. Post USAF, I started full-time at CSUS on my BSEE. The full-time student only lasted one year as I landed a full-time job. Worked as technician while continuing with school part time. Got my BSEE, and moved into a Manufacturing Engineer position. Enjoyed one year no school, then back to CSUS part time for my MSEE. 3 years later got the MSEE and then moved into a Design Engineer position. Worked at that for about 10 years until after having survived multiple layoffs, and acquisitions and divestitures, I got hit with a layoff. Took the 3 month summer vacation off, doing home remodelling projects and stuff, then ended up as a Sales Engineer for a small business where I have been for the last 5 years. Sales & marketing isn't bad, but one day, I expect to get my hands dirty back on the bench designing products instead of selling them.
During that time I got married and then after 12 years of being DINKs, we decided to start a family and so now as I'm pushing 50, I have a 7 year old son while many people...Expand for more
I know that are my age have grandkids older than my son. So I've been married now for 20 years and am living in the same house for the last 16 years, feeling very comfortable with who I am and where I am in life. I ran for Congress once back in 2000, so I have a ballot with my name on it. I have some very good friends I stay in touch with, some of which I go backpacking almost every summer with for the last 20+ years.
My hobbies include backpacking (which includes fishing high mountain streams & lakes), car club member, Amateur Astronomer, cooking, gardening and stuff. I used to mountain climb but it's been years since I scaled a cliff wall. After 32 years of riding a motorcycle, I am currently without one. I may buy another in a few years, I sold my bike I had owned since 1977 because I just wasn't riding it anymore.
Update, 2015, no longer in Sales. 55 and very much looking forward to retiring, but I'm probably 6-13 years away from that, depends upon what the only son's plans are. If he goes to college, I'll continue working to put him through college. If he decides to join the military after High School, I'll have to take a good hard look at my nest egg and see if I'm financially ready to retire. Maybe if I win Lotto, I could retire early, problem is, I guess I would actually have to buy Lotto tickets in order for that to become a reality. LOL
