William's Story

Life There's an Irish story: "The Man Who Had No Story!" Of course, everyone does. I am in good company being in the same business as the Apostle Matthew, before he was called to be a disciple. I am 5'- 5 1/2" tall, or perhaps not too tall. Maybe I am more like Zacchaeus, the short man who climbed a sycomore tree. He was in the business, too. (tax collector) I don't know what I want to be, should I ever grow up. Luckily, I do know who I want to be with; my wife Judy. St Louis is still a pretty good place to be. I will fall apart before it does, I'm sure. School When I was in High School, I went on the transit system bus, every day. I showed up in all my classes. I may have had moderate failure, after all I flunked the first semester of typing, but enjoyed learning. (When I wanted to.) I must not have been all that memorable, in high school. Most people I meet now that were in my class don't remember me. I have had a woman who was in almost all the same classes with me swear that I must be older than her, and must remember her older sister. When school was over, every day I went home. By my yearbook picture, a kind classmate put in "Senior Activities," where there was supposed to be interests, clubs, extracurricular activities, sports and such. College Well, when I was in college, it was pretty buttoned down. I was a Moker. I won an award or two, but I still think I graduated by accident. Maybe there was a mistake in the paperwork. I met good people. I met my best friend, there. Everyone was always walking somewhere. I think I was mostly just walking. When I graduated, I owed the bank $2,800.00 in student loans. I thought it as great as the National Debt. It took awhile to pay off ...Expand for more
at $50.00 a month. All in all it was a good experience. I wish I had paid more attenion to the things I didn't know or didn't like. Since then I found out that is learning, and more importantly is learning to think. THEN, the Seminary. I attended Eden Theological Seminary, full time, for one year. That was 1972 through 1973. At the end of the year, I more or less flunked out. A very nice letter from the Dean of Students, suggested taking a year to clear and reassess my goals. (This was when everyone talked about goals all the time. Before mission statements.) I was more than welcome to apply for readmission, after that. It was a flunk out notice to be proud of, like a hand typed and signed rejection slip from "Atlantic Monthly." Perhaps I should have it framed. I took several classes at "Seminex-Christ Seminary," on a pass fail basis in 1980. My clerical career was pretty much over, though. I was ready to be a layman. I have been an elder and a deacon. In the "Reformed" tradition, these are ordinations for life. Workplace I have never been a butcher, baker or candlestick maker. Those are probably too honest. I have been a tutor in a Public School Reading Program. I drove a Mr Softee truck. I was a teacher in a driving school. (And lived to tell.) I was a Psych Tech. (Back then they just called me an orderly or nurses aid in the locked psyche unit. I know I was just working there because I had the keys and went home when my shift was done.) I was a court clerk for many, many years. I am now a tax collector, or rather work for the elected tax collector. I go to work every day. It is honest work. I also participate in politics. (The honest part.) Working for the city accomplishes something.
