William's Story
Life
Dr.William Gora, Dir.of Bands and Prof. of Saxophone at Appalachian St. U since 1976, where he conducts the Wind Ens.and the administers the band program. During his tenure, the ASU Wind Ens.has hosted residencies by many of America's leading composers and performers. The Wind Ens. has also performed for meetings of the Coll. Band Dirs.Nat'l.Assoc.and the NC Music Ed Assoc.Gora served as dir. of Cannon Music Camp from 1982 through 94.He earned a B.of Mus from the U of Miami studying conducting with Frederick Fennell. Following 2 years of teaching in Ft.Laud.,FL, he completed a MM Ed from the U of FL, where he taught sax and conducted concert and jazz bands.He resumed his studies in conducting and wind lit.with Fennell at U of M and earned a DMA in saxophone performance. Gora has performed and conducted throughout the US,Can,Europe and Romania. hosted the 1st Symposium on School Reform for School Band and Orch. Dirs. and presented a session at the 95 Mid-West Clinic.He received a 2nd grant in 97, presenting a similar symposium at the U of Kans.,and gave an updated class for both the 97 and 98 Mid-West Clinic.He has a wealth of experience as a sax recitalist and jazz and commercial music and has been a member of the NC Symph., the Modesto Symph.and soloist with the Vivaldi Travelling Circus. He is a past Pres.of the S.Div of the Coll.Band Dirs. Nat'l.Assoc and is a member of the Nat'l Band Assoc,serving on the Bd.of Dirs.He was elected into the American Bandmasters Assoc.in 1990 and is on the Board of Dirs. Dr.Gora is a 1995 recipient of the NC Bd. of Govs. Award for Excellence in Teaching.In 2000 he was inducted into the U of M Band Alum Hall of Fame.He recived the KKP (Nat'l Coll.Band Frat) Distinguished Service to Music Medallion in 2006. Gora and wife Ginny (Ragsdale) retired in 2006 and live in New Smyrna Beach, FL. He continues to work as a conductor throughout the US and Europe.
