William's Story
It is funny how you end up here one day just to look and see how your old classmates have changed. But then you find out most for some reason can't post a picture. I wonder why that is, most of the time without the then photo I would not recognize the person. When you start to look that is when you realize you want to see the ones you started out in the first grade at Park View and stayed together all those years. That's people like Anita Leek, David Dobbs, Elizabeth Filter, Jeff Sims, John Pelly, Jim Mercer, Nellis Rhodes, Charlie McCoy, Larry Meyers,(Denny Farrell's Sister)was it Deborah, Edgar Heller, Francis Tucker, Barb Carol Kalowski, Carol Plants and my cousin Kenny Crow but I know that is not all and I am sorry if I spelled the names wrong. I can still remember a couple of teacher¿s names like the music teacher Mrs. Lawler and another named Welch and I think she was the principal. I wonder why I remember her name HAHA.
I really think that was the best time because you went to school so close to home. You played with the people you went to school with. There were stores on so many corners. The corner of Oak and Park, halfway up Oak, Linden and Park, near the top of Linden, Scotty¿s on Linden near the laundry mat, the small store across from the laundry mat. My first crush lived a few houses up from Scotties. I remember making crafts on the weekends in the playground at the top of Park View School. The Playground didn't use to be there. John Marshall seemed to go quickly. I was never crazy about school and I did OK without college but I was lucky with investments and made some wise choices without knowing what I was doing. Today if I were in school I think I would go to college.
The Military was what I wanted because I wanted to get out of Moundsville and travel. I wanted to see the world and boy did I. First deployment had me living in the Philippines because that was where the bombs were and that was my job. There were trips to Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Australia and Japan. At the end of my enlistment I went home because I was tired of being told what to do. The military helps some grow up but not me. I still have not grown up in a couple of ways. Well in 1975 I fell in love with an accident victim and got married. I was all the sudden working in the coal mine (#7 in OHIO) with two babies and a wife. Remember I still hadn¿t grown up so one day the wife and babies were gone and the job...Expand for more
at the mine was also. With nothing left I did what most in Moundsville did at the time I hung out in bars and drank. Well out of the blue the Navy needed me because I was a 16" qualified Gunners Mate for Battleships.
Well I went back in and I advanced like a rocket then I changed my NEC (Navy Enlisted Code) and became a Military Police Investigator and went to school in Alabama. Well the career was going good and I was deployed all the time and when I was in the states I was on the west coast. Remember I am still not grown up but my career is in full swing. Unfortunately I failed as a parent. Oh I paid the child support the judge ordered but that was it.
Well now I was 2 years in Adak Alaska. Now that is way out in the Aleutian chain. It is cold and not like movies about Alaska...it is just cold. Then 3 years in San Antonio TX teaching at the Air Force Police Academy. I married my second wife here and by now I was starting to settle down and act like an adult. Then in 1993 2 years in Japan. My wife stayed in Ill and I lived in Japan because the ship (FFG-60) Rodney M. Davis) a frigate that was at sea 9 months out of the year and she didn't want to be left alone. In 1995 Diana and I moved to Sicily and lived for 4 years. It was great because we traveled all over Europe on trains and planes.
Then I was transferred to a new hospital under construction because I was a physical security specialist and did drug testing for the Navy. My friend and fellow Chief who was the Command Master Chief committed suicide and I took over as Command Chief until a replacement arrived. When the replacement arrived and a turnover was done I transferred back to the fleet.
Now I was out of San Diego on a (LSD-45) USS Comstock. A gator freighter that was a very busy ship. The ship was in Australia when 911 hit and we were loaded with Marines. We went straight to IRAQ and put the first tanks and Marines on the beach with LCAC's. For the next three years I did 3 deployments 1 more to Iraq and 2 to Pakistan.
I retired in June 2004 and had enough so that I would never have to work again so now I fish. You know I never did like working and I don't miss it at all. Sometimes I don't feel like fishing and I just take a nap with my dogs. I didn't show you my dogs. Remember what I said earlier. I did a lot of what I wanted but at a great cost. I lost my children because I was not around so everything you get comes at a high cost.
