William's Story
Life
After graduation from high school, I worked in the mail room at the Newark Advocate newspaper, where I had worked part-time in my sophomore and junior years. I also worked at Levin's Clothing Store, Rockwell Axle and Gear and the Newark Ohio Company (later Roper's) before starting at Owens-Corning Fiberglas in April of 1960. I married my wife in 1962 and we had a son later that year. In 1964, I began an apprenticeship to become a Journeyman Machinist. My daughter was born in 1965. I became a Journeyman Machinist in 1968. I did programming of Numerical Controlled machinery from 1974 to 1977 at Owens. I became the tool room attendant in the mid 1980's and also did some Tool and Die work as well as purchasing of tooling. I also took classes in Electronics in the early 1970's and several computer classes in 1986 and 1987. In 1987, I went to work at General Electric Superabrasives in Worthington. While at GE, I also did some Computer Controlled Numerical Controlled machinery programming and worked 2 years in the Model Shop under Engineering. While in the Model Shop, I did NC programming and bought tooling. I continued taking computer software classes which included AutoCad to generate drawing for use in the Model Shop. I operated various machinery and also worked with v...Expand for more
arious acids that were used in the cleaning process. It was interesting work and I was able to make use of my machining experience, and my chemistry classes from high school.
I retired from both Owens-Corning (1996) and General Electric (2001) and spent a few years doing more volunteering for the Licking County Genealogical Society. I served as Vice-President/Program Chairman, Computer Chairman and the Webmaster for the LCGS. In 2003 I went back to work part-time as a courier for Park National Bank and retired from there in 2010. I continue to be the webmaster for the genealogy society. My hobbies over the years have been collecting postage stamps, camping, collecting records and music from the 1950's and early 1960's, personal computing, genealogy and doing web pages. Just before retiring from Park National Bank, I became involved in finding missing classmates for various Newark High School class reunion committees from the 1950's to the early 1960's. I've also been able to locate childhood friends for some family members, and other friends. It is enjoyable to be able to re-unite classmates, and friends after having drifting apart over the years. I'm a survivor of prostate cancer, skin cancer and non-hodgkin's lymphoma (in remission) so each day is a blessing from God.
