William's Story

Life In July of 1957 I joined the Westmount Police and was assigned the motorcycle patrol. After the MUC took over policing in Mtl. I left in 1974 and went to Ontario, Town of Petrolia and stayed their for 5 yrs then in 1979, I went to Aylmer, Ont as Chief of Police, Aylmer is the home of the Ont Police College and the heart to tobacco country. Then in 1987 I went to the City of St. Thomas, Ont as Deputy Chief. I retired in 1997 after 40 yrs Policing. In 1998 My first wife died of a heart attack very suddenly. I remarried in 2001 and still living in Aylmer. 2 of my son's are living here and 1 in Petrolia. My youngest is 42 yrs old. I enjoy wood working and gardening. Most of all I enjoy not having to get those phone calls in the early morning and having to go to work. FURTHER to above comments from Bill personally, please read on - - I am the 'lucky girl' who married Bill in 2001 - my name is Ruth-Anne Kavanagh and yes, I'm the one with Bill in the above photo! With both Bill and I retired, we shared so many wonderful times together. One of the first was flying out to British Columbia to visit family on my side and, just to be different, we returned by catching the relaxing two day Rocky Mountaineer train ride, from Vancouver to Calgary, staying overn...Expand for more
ight in Kamloops on our way home. We flew the remainder home. Of course Bill has always been a train lover so that was a great experience! We got involved with Ancestry and chased our relatives around the world, particularly, we toured Ireland - so many memories from those wonderful journeys. We did it all by B + B, staying at a different place most nights and meeting fabulous people. We enjoyed so much that we went back the following year and did it again!! But, if you really want to relax in life, take a four or six week holiday and find heaven in the Algarve, Portugal. Again we did this several times!! We found travelling during our winter months was plenty warm enough for us to enjoy their beaches as long as one found protection from wind and the cliffs certainly provided a good windbreaker. It was great but, as much fun and total relaxation as we could get, life like this - doesn't last forever - memories do!! Unfortunately, Bill's struggled with cancer several times but he just couldn't keep fighting and he died peacefully at home with his boys and I at his side, on Saturday, January 6, 2018 To those of you who knew Bill in his younger years over followed him throughout his policing career, thanks for always being there for him!!
